Primary Job Purpose

To assist in the delivery of efficient and high-quality research in line with compliance and timelines

Description of position

  • Act as an assistant to the Study Investigator/Director on multiple specialties of GCP, GLP and non-standard studies to deliver efficient and high-quality research in line with compliance and timelines.
  • Act as Study Investigator on a specialty of non-standard studies to deliver efficient and high-quality research in line with compliance and timelines.
  • Draft protocols and ethics applications to high-quality in line with compliance and timelines.
  • Team Lead duties which include resource scheduling and updating of departmental worksheets in line with good people practices and in accordance with departmental objectives.
  • Promotion of principals either preventing the onset of animal diseases and/or controlling the escalation of animal diseases ensuring good animal health and wellbeing by following set instructions and procedures.
  • Conduct relevant observations, examination and/or analysis with regard to animal health and wellbeing by following set instructions and procedures.
  • Activities and practices involving either the quarantine and/or isolation of animals to promote the principals of animal health and wellbeing by following set instructions and procedures.
  • Following set instructions and procedures to prevent contamination, maintain and optimize animal health and wellbeing and maintain a clean, orderly and audit ready facility at all times.
  • Interact, socialize, and handle animals by following set instructions and procedures to ensure content, well-adjusted and cared for animals.
  • Perform specific parasite related and/or parasite breeding tasks by following set instructions and procedures to ensure safe and successful parasite practices.
  • Perform study administrative tasks by following set instructions and procedures to ensure safe and successful study delivery.
  • Identify and implement preventative measures in accordance with set instructions and procedures in cases where serious diseases are suspected.
  • Receiving, inspecting, storing, and dispensing of animal feed as required to units by internal standards.
  • Verification, monitoring, and control of environmental monitoring devices (temperature, humidity, and water quality) by following set instructions and procedures to ensure a correct controlled climate and safe water quality for animal consumption and use.
  • Administration of veterinary products to animals actively being utilised in a study inclusive of drugs utilised for concomitant therapy.
  • Promotion of the principals of therapy and care of animals ensuring good animal health and wellbeing by following set instructions and procedures.
  • Identify and implement appropriate environmental enrichment material/s and activities in accordance with set instruction as and procedures for the benefit of animals.
  • Conduct blood and tissue sampling by following set instructions and procedures to determine animal health.

Work Environment

The employee is required to:

  • work in a laboratory/research type environment with strict access and biosafety controls
  • interact with and handle animals
  • be available for work during normal work hours as well as after-hours according to pre-arranged departmental schedules that my require evening, weekend, and public holiday work

Qualification and Experience requirements

  • Licensed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, or Degree in Natural or Biological Science and two (2) years' research experience, or
  • Diploma in Veterinary Technology, Veterinary Medicine, or closely related field and five (5) years' research experience, or
  • 0-3 years relevant experience

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Outlook, MS Teams, and Office 365
  • Ability to learn new software and systems
  • Ability to work independently and be part of a team

  • Meeting tight deadlines, time management and scheduling

Physical requirements

  • Ability to work the duration of an eight-hour shift, on your feet, in constant motion
