What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Anesthesiology Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Anesthesiology Intern, you need a solid knowledge of human physiology, pharmacology, and clinical procedures, typically demonstrated by completion of medical school and a relevant internship placement. Familiarity with anesthesia machines, patient monitoring systems, and documentation software is essential, as is basic certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Strong attention to detail, effective teamwork, and clear communication are crucial soft skills that support patient safety and collaboration with surgical teams. These competencies ensure safe delivery of anesthesia care, accurate monitoring, and rapid response to critical situations in the operating room.

What are some common challenges faced by anesthesiology interns during their rotations?

Anesthesiology interns often face challenges such as adapting quickly to high-pressure situations, managing multiple patients simultaneously, and mastering complex procedures under supervision. Balancing the steep learning curve with long hours can also be demanding, as interns are expected to build core clinical skills while assisting attending anesthesiologists in surgeries and patient monitoring. Effective communication with surgical teams and learning to anticipate the needs of both surgeons and patients are essential for success in this role.

What are anesthesiology interns?

Anesthesiology interns are medical doctors in their first year of postgraduate training, focusing on the field of anesthesiology. They typically rotate through various medical specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, and critical care to build a solid clinical foundation. During this year, they begin to learn the basics of anesthesia practice, patient assessment, and perioperative care under the supervision of experienced anesthesiologists. This internship prepares them for advanced training in anesthesiology residency programs.

Midwestern University (MWU) is a private, not-for-profit organization that provides graduate and professional education in the health sciences. The University has two campuses, one in Downers Grove, Illinois and one in Glendale, Arizona where the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is located. More than 6,700 full-time students are enrolled in graduate programs in veterinary medicine, osteopathic medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nurse anesthesia, cardiovascular perfusion, podiatry, optometry, clinical psychology, speech language pathology, graduate nursing, and biomedical sciences. Over 500 full-time faculty members and 400 staff members are dedicated to the education and development of our students in an environment that encourages learning, respect for all members of the health care team, service, interdisciplinary scholarly activity, and personal growth. The addition of veterinary medicine on the Glendale campus provides an excellent opportunity to train students following the principles of One Health at Arizona's first veterinary college. The CVM received full accreditation by the AVMA Council on Education in September of 2018.
The College of Veterinary Medicine is housed in Cactus Wren Hall and in the Animal Health Institute. Cactus Wren Hall is a new facility with ample classrooms, teaching laboratories, research laboratories, conference rooms, and offices. The Animal Health Institute is comprised of The Companion Animal Clinic, The Large Animal Clinic, and The Diagnostic Pathology Center. The Companion Animal Clinic is a modern and innovative veterinary hospital for small animals. The 110,000 sq. ft. building contains state-of-the-art medical, surgical, internal medicine, dental, and urgent care facilities. Additional patient services include anesthesiology neurology, physical therapy, cardiology, therapeutic plasma exchange, shelter medicine, clinical pathology, and microbiology. In addition to outstanding clinical facilities and equipment, the Companion Animal Clinic houses a pharmacy, a large and well-equipped surgery teaching laboratory, simulated examination rooms for clinical communications training using standardized clients/patients, and ample conference and small-group meeting rooms. Adjacent to the Companion Animal Clinic is the Large Animal Clinic, which houses large animal teaching and treatment facilities, and small herds of cattle and horses. The Diagnostic Pathology Center offers a full range of anatomical pathology and forensic pathology services and contains ample teaching spaces.
Our team is looking for a faculty member that is a lifelong learner that thrives in a positive environment where the next generation of veterinarians are being trained. Our mission is to improve animal and human life through innovative veterinary education and state of the art health care services. Therefore, we are seeking a faculty member with strong interests in teaching and who is excited about participating in the growth of our veterinary college and having a role in shaping its teaching and clinical programs. While independent research is not a requirement for this position, a certain degree of scholarly activity is expected of all faculty members. Evidence of interest and experience in research will be considered an asset.
