As of Jun 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for anesthesiology assistant in the United States is $67.68, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.32 and $92.31 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are anesthesiology assistants?

Anesthesiology assistants (AAs) are highly trained healthcare professionals who work under the supervision of licensed anesthesiologists to develop and implement anesthesia care plans. Their duties include monitoring patients before, during, and after anesthesia, administering drugs, and ensuring patient safety throughout surgical procedures. AAs are required to complete a master's level program and pass a national certification exam. They play a critical role in the anesthesia care team, helping to provide safe and effective anesthesia services in hospitals and surgical centers.

Where do CAA get paid the most?

Anesthesiology Assistants (CAAs) tend to earn the highest salaries in regions with a high cost of living and strong healthcare demand, such as metropolitan areas with large hospitals and academic medical centers. Salaries can also vary based on experience, certifications, and the complexity of cases handled, with some states offering higher compensation due to regional healthcare funding and demand for specialized anesthesia support.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an Anesthesiology Assistant and how do they collaborate with the rest of the surgical team?

Anesthesiology Assistants typically begin their day by reviewing patient charts and preparing anesthesia equipment. During procedures, they work closely with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and nurses to monitor patients' vital signs, adjust anesthesia levels, and respond to any intraoperative changes. Collaboration is key, as they participate in preoperative assessments, communicate patient needs, and ensure smooth transitions between surgical team members. The role requires adaptability and strong communication skills to maintain patient safety and support optimal surgical outcomes.

What qualifications do you need to be an Anesthesiologist Assistant?

To become an anesthesiologist assistant, candidates must hold a bachelor's degree, typically in a science-related field, and complete a master's degree from an accredited anesthesiologist assistant program. They also need to pass the Certification Examination administered by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Anesthesiologist Assistants (NBCRNA). Additionally, state licensure is required to practice legally in most regions.

What is the difference between Anesthesiology Assistant vs Nurse Anesthetist?

AspectAnesthesiology AssistantNurse Anesthetist
Required CredentialsMaster's degree from an accredited program, certification examMaster's or Doctorate in Nurse Anesthesia, certification exam
Work EnvironmentHospitals, surgical centers, clinicsHospitals, surgical centers, outpatient facilities
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in hospitals and academic settings, primarily in the USWidely used in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and military settings

While both Anesthesiology Assistants and Nurse Anesthetists work alongside anesthesiologists to provide anesthesia care, they differ in training backgrounds and certification paths. Anesthesiology Assistants typically hold a master's degree and work under physician supervision, whereas Nurse Anesthetists are advanced practice nurses with extensive nursing experience. Both roles are vital in perioperative care, but Nurse Anesthetists often have broader scope and autonomy in practice.

Can you make 300k as a CAA?

An anesthesiology assistant (CAA) typically earns a salary below $300,000 annually, with most salaries ranging from $80,000 to $150,000 depending on experience, location, and work setting. Achieving a $300,000 salary is uncommon and may require additional responsibilities, advanced certifications, or working in high-paying regions or specialized environments.

Who gets paid more, CRNA or CAA?

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) generally earn higher salaries than Certified Anesthesia Assistants (CAAs). CRNAs typically have more advanced education, certification requirements, and autonomous practice, which contribute to their higher compensation. Salary differences can vary by region and healthcare setting but are generally significant in the anesthesia field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Anesthesiology Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Anesthesiology Assistant, you need a master's degree from an accredited Anesthesiologist Assistant program, strong knowledge of human physiology, and a national certification (such as NCCAA certification). Competence with anesthesia delivery systems, patient monitoring equipment, and electronic health records is essential. Outstanding attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications ensure safe, accurate anesthesia care and seamless collaboration with anesthesiologists and surgical teams.
