EMPLOYMENT BEGINS: As soon as possible
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
  • To support all students in their personal, academic, and career development through responsive services, guidance and individual planning so that they can reach their full potential as adults and members of the community.

QUALIFICATIONS: Counselor Certification Required
Education/Certification:
  • Master's Degree
  • Texas Teacher Certificate
  • Counselor Certificate

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
  • Training in the fields of child abuse, parent education, ADD/ADHD, divorce, victimization, self-esteem, social skills, conflict resolution, communication skills (SIS), Sec. 504, At-Risk, Dyslexia, bullying, suicide and decision making skills
  • Knowledge in the areas of collecting and reporting PEIMS data
  • Exhibit excellent communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of basic computer operations
  • Possess general knowledge of scheduling/registration process
  • Ability to meet established deadlines and to maintain accurate records
  • Have knowledge and understanding of the Policies and Procedures of the MISD
  • Exhibit highly effective organizational and consensus building skills
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of the schedule change process, organizational development, conflict resolution, current mental health concerns presenting in schools, and assessment skills

EXPERIENCE:
  • Successful experience as a classroom teacher
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Reporting PEIMS data accurately and on time (For High School Counselors)
  • Verify campus data submitted to TEA and submit corrections in a timely manner
  • Provide individual and group counseling to students as needed and appropriate
  • Lead developmentally appropriate guidance activities, adhering to state and district guidelines
  • Plan and conduct orientation programs for incoming students in order to prepare and assist them in transitioning to a new campus
  • Plan and conduct scheduling and registration of students
  • Provide support and consultation to teachers in their interactions with students
  • Provide support and consultations to parents concerning the personal, academic, and career development of their students
  • Collaborate with assistant principals concerning the attendance and behavior concerns of students
  • Work closely with the school nurse concerning the health needs of students, and in incidents of child abuse
  • Cooperate with teachers in making special education referrals to the ARD committee
  • Serve as a 504 Case Manager for selected students
  • Interpret data with students and parents
  • Assist students and their parents in locating available and appropriate referral sources, and maintain cooperative working relationships with these community agencies
  • Provide yearly professional development to campus staff in the areas of recognizing and reporting child abuse, Section 504 and suicide prevention, and others areas as appropriate
  • Assist students with completing the financial aid process, and the admission process at their selected college or university
  • Support students with questions and concerns regarding post-secondary options
  • Support district initiatives to address summer melt
  • Work with Advanced Academics Specialist to complete the application process for dual credit (For High School Counselors)
  • Assist with resolving conflicts with master schedule
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Clerical Aides and student workers as assigned (For Middle School & High School Counselors)

  • Communicating well, making multiple decisions regarding students' educational, physical, and emotional well being, and maintaining emotional control under stress
