Job description

Description

 The Journeyman Welder is responsible for performing skilled welding, fabrication, repair, modification, installation, and structural steel work on amusement rides, attractions, equipment, facilities, and infrastructure throughout Lagoon Amusement Park. This position independently performs complex welding and fabrication projects, supports ride installation and refurbishment projects, and assists with construction, maintenance, and infrastructure improvements in accordance with applicable codes, industry standards, manufacturer specifications, and Company policies and procedures. The Journeyman Welder plays a critical role in maintaining safe, reliable, and high-quality facilities, equipment, and attractions for Lagoon guests and team members.  


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

  • Perform advanced welding, fabrication, installation, and repair work on amusement rides, attractions, equipment, vehicles, buildings, and infrastructure.  
  • Fabricate, modify, install, and repair structural steel, supports, platforms, railings, gates, fencing, ride components, and specialty fabricated items.  
  • Read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, welding symbols, engineering specifications, and technical documents.  
  • Perform layout, fitting, measuring, cutting, and fabrication of complex projects.  
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and repair work utilizing GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), and SMAW (Stick) welding processes.  
  • Perform oxy-acetylene cutting, heating, brazing, metal forming, and fabrication operations as required.  
  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, repairs, and refurbishment projects on rides, facilities, and park infrastructure.  
  • Assist with ride installation, ride modifications, major construction projects, and infrastructure improvements.  
  • Inspect completed welds and fabrication work to ensure compliance with specifications and quality standards.  
  • Diagnose fabrication and repair needs and determine appropriate corrective actions.  
  • Train, mentor, and assist Welder Apprentices and other team members in welding and fabrication techniques.  
  • Maintain tools, equipment, welding machines, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.  
  • Follow OSHA requirements, Lockout/Tagout procedures, welding safety standards, and Company policies and procedures.  
  • Coordinate with Ride Maintenance, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical Services, Construction, and other departments on park projects.  
  • Understanding and working knowledge of ASTM amusement ride standards, amusement ride safety practices, and safe mechanical operations.  
  • Respond to maintenance emergencies and urgent repair situations as required.  
  • Perform other duties and assignments as directed by management. 

Requirements

Required Qualifications / Abilities

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.  
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.  
  • Minimum four (4) years of welding and fabrication experience, completion of a welding apprenticeship, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.  
  • Valid Utah Driver License required.  
  • Demonstrated proficiency in GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), and SMAW (Stick) welding processes, as well as oxy-acetylene cutting and heating techniques.  
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, fabrication drawings, engineering specifications, and technical documents.  
  • Knowledge of welding codes, metallurgy, fabrication practices, and safe welding procedures.  
  • AWS welding certifications preferred.  
  • Ability to independently diagnose fabrication and repair needs and determine appropriate corrective actions.  
  • Ability to perform structural steel fabrication, fitting, layout, measuring, cutting, and installation work.  
  • Ability to communicate effectively and provide technical guidance to apprentices and other employees.  
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while managing multiple assignments and priorities.  
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and guest service.  
  • Understanding of ASTM amusement ride standards, welding codes, and industry safety practices preferred.  
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended work hours as operational needs require. 


Working Conditions

  • This position requires working in an environment that includes exposure to high noise levels, bright/flashing light or darkened areas, fog or haze, large crowds and other factors typical to an amusement park setting. 
  • This position will perform essential job duties outdoors and be exposed to environmental elements including, but not limited to, extreme heat or cold, wind, dust, noise, rain, snow, and direct sunlight. 
  • Regular exposure to welding fumes, sparks, heat, vibration, dust, mechanical equipment, and moving machinery.  
  • Work may be performed at heights, in confined spaces, on ladders, scaffolding, ride structures, rooftops, and construction sites.  
  • Requires the use of personal protective equipment including welding helmets, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, respirators, and other required safety equipment. 


Physical Requirements


The physical demands described below must be met to successfully perform the essential job responsibilities.

  • Must be able to use fingers, hands, arms, and legs to reach, operate equipment, climb stairs, evacuate guests from lifts, perform routine safety checks, and use hands to handle or feel.  
  • Able to sit, stand, walk, crouch, crawl, kneel, reach above the head or stoop for the duration of a shift up to eight (8) hours.  
  • Able to regularly lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds and up to one hundred (100) pounds assisted.  
  • Able to move equipment which would include pushing, pulling, bending, and lifting.  
  • Able to walk quickly to and from job locations up to one (1) mile distance.  
  • Must have sufficient hearing and visual acuity to observe equipment, Lagoon guests, welding operations, and worksite conditions.  
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  
  • Must be able to climb ladders, work from elevated platforms, and access ride structures, rooftops, and construction areas safely.  
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment, including welding helmets, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, respirators, and protective clothing.
