What is an AMR EMT?

AMR EMTs are Emergency Medical Technicians who work for American Medical Response (AMR), a private company that provides emergency and non-emergency medical transportation services. These EMTs respond to 911 calls, provide basic life support, and transport patients to hospitals or other medical facilities. They are trained to assess medical emergencies, administer basic medical care, and ensure patient safety during transport. AMR EMTs often work in ambulances and are an essential part of the emergency medical services system.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an AMR EMT?

To thrive as an AMR EMT (Emergency Medical Technician), you need a solid understanding of emergency medical procedures, patient assessment, and a current EMT certification or license. Familiarity with ambulance equipment, electronic patient care reporting systems, and protocols for emergency response is typically required. Outstanding communication, stress management, and teamwork skills help EMTs respond effectively in high-pressure situations. These abilities are critical for ensuring patient safety and delivering timely, efficient care during emergencies.

What challenges do AMR EMTs face and how can they be managed?

EMTs working in ambulance response roles often encounter challenging situations such as high-stress emergencies, rapidly changing environments, and the need to make quick decisions under pressure. Managing these challenges requires strong communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to stay calm in critical situations. EMTs often work closely with paramedics, hospital staff, and other first responders, so being adaptable and maintaining a clear focus on patient care is essential. Continuous training and support from experienced team members also help EMTs build resilience and improve their ability to handle complex calls.

An Earn While You Learn Opportunity sponsored by AMR

EMT ACADEMY - FULL-TIME STUDENT

EARN WHILE YOU LEARN TO BE AN EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN

(PLEASE READ ALL THE DETAILS)

AMR is offering a unique opportunity for individuals interested in a rewarding career in pre-hospital medicine.

91% of AMR students that successfully completed the course are still currently happily employed, so far 20% of them have taken the opportunity to pursue their Paramedic certification.

What is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?

The primary focus of the EMT is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation, and functions as part of a comprehensive EMS response under medical oversight. An EMT performs interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance and is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.

About the Program:

The eligible candidate will be hired as a full-time employee and compensated with a training wage while in attendance at the EMT Academy, sponsored by AMR. The academy is a rigorous six-week program which qualifies the employee to take the National Registry of EMT exam.  Upon successful completion of the National Registry EMT exam, the employee will apply for a  Arizona State EMCT-EMT Basic Certification. There is no cost for the class and all books, tuition, fees, and uniforms will be paid by AMR. Upon successful completion of the class, all tests and state certification, the employee will be transferred to an EMT position.

*This program will begin 9/2/2026 -10/12/2026.* Training is about 6 weeks. No class on 9/7/2026 in recognition of Labor Day.

Students will attend orientation at AMR Tucson operations first on 8/31 and 9/1, before starting classes at PSESI on 9/2 (4355 E. Calle Aurora Tucson, AZ 85709).  Orientation and class start dates to follow.  EMT Academy is an instructor-led, hands-on training program that is held five (5) days a week, Monday through Friday with occasional Saturdays.

Candidate prerequisite requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a HS diploma or GED
  • Have a valid Driver License with NO Restrictions
  • Successfully complete thorough pre-employment screening which includes motor vehicle and criminal background checks, drug testing and a physical agility test (PLEASE NOTE:  Drug screening includes THC/Marijuana. Applicants who test positive for THC/Marijuana will be disqualified)
  • Successfully complete a Reading Assessment administered by Pima College and meet entrance standards
  • Sign 18-month service commitment/agreement

What happens after passing the course?

After successful completion of the course, the employee will be eligible to take a written and skills test through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Once certified by the NREMT, the employee will then submit the required documentation to the state to obtain their Arizona EMCT-EMT Basic certification.

Upon receipt of the State of Arizona EMCT -EMT Basic certification, the employee will receive their full-time position assignment within the AMR TUCSON business unit. They will also qualify for benefits including:

  • Excellent benefit package including medical, dental, life, vision, disability and 401(k) with company match
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) hours
  • Opportunities for professional growth
