Services we provide include Translation, Localization, Onsite Interpreting, Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), and Over-the-Phone Interpreting (OPI) Services. Our clients include some of the world's largest businesses, government entities, healthcare organizations, educational institutions and not-for-profit organizations.

We are seeking a qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to join our Deaf and Hard of Hearing team in supporting the deaf and hard of hearing community.  

Interpreter, ASL (American Sign Language) 


The Interpreter provides American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation, transliteration, and sight translation to facilitate effective communication for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals using consecutive and simultaneous interpreting methods, as appropriate. 

This is an onsite, project-based position supporting the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in an educational setting, with an anticipated duration of approximately 9 months, although the assignment may be shorter or longer depending on project needs. During periods when school is not in session or assignment needs are reduced, the interpreter may be asked to provide interpreting services in other settings based on business needs 


Status: Full-time (project-based position) 

Location: Houston, TX (On-site) 

Certification Requirements: BEI or RID Certification 


Roles and Responsibilities: 

General duties include without limitation: 

    • The Interpreter provides American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation, transliteration, and sight translation to facilitate effective communication for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals using consecutive and simultaneous interpreting methods, as appropriate. 
    • Adhere to NAD/RID Code of Professional Conduct 
    • Adhere to and follow all MasterWord ISO required processes in reporting, escalation and documentation. 
    • Adhere to the MasterWord Communication Plan for all internal and external communications. 
    • Attend scheduled division specific events when applicable. 
    • Includes but not limited to: provide effective communication interpretation services to members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community both in-person and remotely in diverse industry settings 
    • Support the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Department with internal interpretation needs for Deaf/HH staff, operational needs, and other duties for the division as assigned. 
    • Provide observational feedback on operational or service adjustments that may be needed such as the recommendation for a Certified or Qualified Deaf Interpreter 
    • Demonstrate MasterWord's core values at all times in conjunction with any MasterWord performed duty or responsibility. 
    • Perform other duties as assigned, including record and file retention, general office support, and serving as backup receptionist and administrative assistant when needed.

      Required Qualifications:  


      • Associate's degree or higher is preferred or five (5) years of compensated interpreting experience preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
      • Broad Knowledge of Deaf culture, the ASL interpreting field, basic linguistics, and medical terminology in American Sign Langue and English.
      • Progressive experience in medical interpretation settings working within diverse organizations and multi-cultural environments. 
      • Must be willing to work occasional extensive hours to meet possible client needs and provide after-hours on call support on a scheduled rotating basis. 
      • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
