What is Amazon Mechanical Turk?

Amazon Mechanical Turk, often shortened to MTurk, is a crowdsourcing marketplace operated by Amazon. It enables individuals and businesses to outsource simple, repetitive tasks—called Human Intelligence Tasks (HITs)—to a distributed workforce of remote workers. These tasks can include data entry, surveys, content moderation, and more, which are often difficult for computers to perform accurately. Workers on the platform can choose tasks to complete and earn money for each one finished. MTurk helps businesses get large-scale tasks done quickly and provides flexible earning opportunities for workers.

What types of tasks can I expect to work on as an Amazon Mechanical Turk worker, and how do I choose which ones to complete?

As an Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) worker, you will encounter a wide variety of microtasks, such as data entry, image categorization, transcription, surveys, and content moderation. You have the flexibility to browse available tasks (called HITs) and select those that match your skills, interests, and desired pay rate. It’s common for workers to start with simpler tasks and gradually take on more complex HITs as they build experience and approval ratings. Consistently completing high-quality work can help you qualify for better-paying and more interesting tasks over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Amazon Mechanical Turk worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Amazon Mechanical Turk Worker, you need strong attention to detail, basic computer literacy, and the ability to follow instructions accurately—no formal qualifications are required. Familiarity with the Amazon Mechanical Turk platform and basic spreadsheet or data entry tools is helpful for maximizing productivity. Self-motivation, time management, and perseverance are important soft skills for managing tasks independently and meeting deadlines. These abilities ensure quality work, maximize earnings, and help maintain a high approval rating for continued access to tasks.
