Job description

Every day, customers run millions of queries on Amazon Athena from ad-hoc exploration to mission-critical pipelines. Today, they get results. Tomorrow, we want them to understand why their queries behave the way they do how much they cost, where time is spent, what went wrong, and what to do about it. We're developing new capabilities in Athena to enable customers, both external and internal, to do this.
Amazon Athena is an interactive query service that simplifies data analysis in Amazon S3 using standard SQL. Athena is serverless, so there is no infrastructure to set up or manage. Our customers use Athena to process logs, perform data analytics, and run interactive queries and get started quickly. This is all done through a simple, easy to use API in front of a complex, distributed system.
We are looking for a senior engineer to work within the team and across analytics in creating solutions to provide customers with insights into their usage of Athena while keeping the Athena experience as simple as possible. This includes publishing data to customer accounts, using your experience in AI/ML to drive deeper and more valuable insights and optimizations for customers and in our service. You'll have an opportunity to coach and mentor the team, learn more about query engines from the team and through experience, and grow our ability to make Athena even easier to use.
Key job responsibilities
Our ideal candidate has excellent programming skills, is an independent decision-maker with high judgement to build distributed systems supporting and delighting customers. As a senior engineer on the team you will work on finding ways to help customers extend Athena simply, scale and automate operations, and help develop others on the team and across the organization. We expect you to identify problems we haven't thought of yet. The best candidate sees a gap in the customer experience and builds the case (and the system) to close it.
A day in the life
The Insights & Extensions team is part of the Athena Engine organizations. In this role, you will work through other SDEs on our team, partner with your manager and other Sr. SDEs in and outside of our team to build and execute our roadmap. This includes Athena extensions like Federated Query, User Defined Functions, and helping find new ways to help customers extend Athena. You will work across our org to deliver the right solutions for customers with our core Athena control plane and engine team partners.
About the team
AWS values diverse experiences. Even if you do not meet all of the preferred qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply.
