Job Description:

  • The Senior Open-Source Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the evaluation, design, implementation, and ongoing management of open source database platforms supporting applications.
  • This role operates in a highly distributed, cloud-first environment and partners with engineering, infrastructure, and application teams to deliver scalable, secure, and highly available database solutions.
  • This position requires a self-driven individual who can work independently and collaboratively while contributing to a strong engineering culture.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer and support open-source database platforms including MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, and Amazon Aurora PG, Amazon Aurora MySQL.
  • Ensure performance, availability, scalability, and reliability of production and non-production databases, proactively identifying and resolving performance, capacity, replication, and distributed data issues.
  • Perform routine database maintenance including vacuuming, indexing, archiving, patching, and upgrades Install, configure, and maintain database software across hybrid cloud environments Design, implement, and support replication and data movement solutions including Tungsten Replicator and AWS DMS Support AWS database services (RDS, EC2, Aurora, Redshift), ensuring optimal performance, scalability, and cost efficiency Implement and maintain database standards across security, provisioning, patching, upgrades, and operational maturity.
  • Manage database security across the ecosystem, including user access, permissions, and application connectivity.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code and automation solutions using Terraform, Ansible, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Utilize monitoring tools such as PMM (Percona), CloudWatch, and New Relic to ensure database health and uptime.
  • Collaborate with application and infrastructure teams to optimize database design, performance, and cost efficiency.
  • Actively engage application and peer infrastructure teams to identify and drive cost optimization opportunities for database workloads with measurable outcomes.
  • Participate in on-call support and incident response.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in database administration with a focus on open-source technologies.
  • Strong experience with MySQL 8.0, PostgreSQL 17, MariaDB 10.6, Amazon Aurora PG 15, Amazon Aurora MySQL in production environments, including version management and lifecycle support.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS database services including RDS, EC2, Aurora, and Redshift.
  • Proven experience designing and managing high availability architectures, including replication, failover strategies, and distributed database systems.
  • Strong understanding of backup and recovery strategies, including point-in-time recovery (PITR) and disaster recovery planning.
  • Experience with replication technologies such as Tungsten or similar tools.
  • Experience building and managing automation using Terraform, Ansible, scripting, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning skills, including database optimization, query tuning, and I/O performance analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage modern AI and tooling ecosystems including prompt engineering and integration with platforms such as MCP to enhance database operations, automate workflows, and accelerate troubleshooting and insights.
  • Experience managing database security, access controls, and network configurations.
  • Experience working in hybrid cloud environments (on-prem and AWS).
  • Strong working knowledge of Linux operating systems and shell scripting Experience with Aurora scaling, multi-AZ deployments, and read replica strategies Knowledge of AWS cost optimization practices for database workloads.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively leverage AI tools, including prompt engineering, to support database operations, accelerate troubleshooting, and improve productivity.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
