ACCOUNTING SPECIALIST

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

The Mpls Downtown Council (MDC) is currently hiring a part-time, in-office Accounting Specialist to process accounts payable, manage cash receipts, and provide general accounting support at our main office.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING...

The Part-Time Accounting Specialist (Accounts Payable & Cash Receipts), is responsible for processing accounts payable transactions, recording and reconciling cash receipts, and providing general accounting support. This position ensures the timely and accurate processing of financial transactions while maintaining compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, organizational policies, grant requirements, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and committed to supporting the organization's mission through sound financial stewardship.


This position is additionally responsible for routine and ad hoc report generation, periodic closing processes, financial audit support, and documentation for the Mpls Downtown Council (MDC), the Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District (DID), and its wholly controlled subsidiary Vibrant & Safe Downtown. The Accounting Specialist works closely with the Controller and interacts frequently with operational staff.


· Process accounts payable and receivables, including weekly check printing & mailing, entering payments into accounting software, processing electronic payments, and posting journal entries.

· Conduct accounts receivable functions accurately and on time, including: creating and issuing invoices; processing and recording payments; resolving issues and discrepancies; and maintaining appropriate documentation.

· Conduct accounts payable functions accurately and on time, including: contacting operational staff as needed to obtain approval and proper coding of bills received; preparing and issuing checks; and maintaining appropriate documentation.

· Track credit card purchases and ensure that proper documentation and approval are obtained and maintained.

· Prepare and enter journal entries into accounting software for monthly credit card transactions.

· Ensure that proper documentation, including W9, is maintained for all independent contractors, and produce annual 1099s.

· Perform reconciliations to ensure that all transactions have been recorded correctly.

· Communicate with co-workers, management, clients and others in a courteous and professional manner.

· Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.

· Maintain business Amazon account, including transaction review, coding, and posting to the general ledger.

· Provide general accounting support as needed and assigned.

· Other related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

· Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting preferred; equivalent work experience may be considered.

· Minimum of two years of experience in accounts payable, bookkeeping, and accounting.

· Strong knowledge and practice with GAAP principles.

· Nonprofit experience is a plus.

· Strong proficiency in MS Office applications, particularly Excel, cloud-based accounting software and modern financial tools to streamline day-to-day accounting workflows.

· Detail-oriented, ability to work efficiently and accurately.

· Must pass a pre-employment background check

WORK ENVIRONMENT

JOB DETAILS

Location: Main Office, Young Quinlan Building, Minneapolis, MN 55402

Job Type: Regular, Part-Time

Classification: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Hours/Week: 20-25 hours per week

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 4-5 hours per day in-office during regular business hours. The specific work schedule will be established in collaboration with the Controller to meet organizational needs while providing flexibility to the employee.
