What is an AM server?

An AM Server (morning server) is responsible for providing food and beverage service to customers, typically during breakfast and lunch shifts at a restaurant, hotel, or café. Their duties include taking orders, delivering food, refilling drinks, and ensuring a positive dining experience. They may also help with setting up tables, handling payments, and maintaining cleanliness. Strong customer service skills and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the AM server position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AM Server, you need a thorough understanding of menu items, food safety standards, and basic math skills for handling orders and payments, typically supported by previous restaurant or hospitality experience. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems and knowledge of food handling certifications are often required. Excellent communication, multitasking, and customer service skills help AM Servers build rapport with guests and manage busy morning shifts effectively. These skills are essential for ensuring efficient service, guest satisfaction, and smooth team collaboration in a fast-paced dining environment.

What does a typical morning shift look like for an AM server?

A typical morning shift for an AM Server begins with preparing the dining area, reviewing reservations or expected guests, and ensuring readiness for breakfast service. You'll greet customers, take orders, serve food and beverages, and handle special requests or dietary needs, all while maintaining a friendly and efficient atmosphere. AM Servers often work closely with kitchen staff, bussers, and management to ensure smooth operations and timely service. Peak hours can be fast-paced, so effective teamwork and strong organizational skills are important. After the breakfast rush, responsibilities may include cleaning tables, resetting the dining room, and assisting with shift transitions.
