Job description

Progress Foundation provides a continuum of behavioral healthcare to Bay Area communities, including San Francisco, San Rafael, Santa Rosa, and Napa.
Our programs serve as alternatives to being stabilized in a hospital or institution, and offer opportunity for rehabilitation in voluntary, homey environments. Programs range from an Urgent Care Clinic, to short-term residential Crisis Services, to long-term residential Transitional Services, to Supported and Independent Living. Our programs are meant to keep people with serious mental illness in their communities, surrounded by their support networks and loved ones.
Folks who believe people with serious mental illness deserve voluntary opportunities for rehabilitation are encouraged to apply. Folks with experience - rather than a degree - are also encouraged to apply. While people pursuing licensure as clinicians do work at Progress Foundation, we welcome those from a wide variety of backgrounds and not just psychology, psychiatry, or other medical-model mental health treatment fields.
Those with backgrounds in Social Work, Disability Justice, Advocacy, or Activism, and Harm Reduction are also welcomed.
Progress Foundation strongly values community-based care, client-centered services, and diverse teams with wide-ranging points of view. Strategic community leaders who will advocate for clients and social rehabilitation as an alternative to hospitalization or institutionalization are highly sought after.
Primary Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Program Director or the Assistant Director, Counselors provide support and assistance to clients of our two unique adult psychiatric transitional residential treatment program. The Counselors advocate for and respond to clients' treatment and rehabilitation needs. Specific functions are outlined in the job description.
General duties include: Promote the philosophy of social rehabilitation as it applies to residential treatment; performance of intake interviews; group, individual, and family counseling; treatment plan development and implementation; coordination of activities; discharge planning; and developing and maintaining contact with clients' therapists and related treatment programs. Maintain computer requirements of the City and County of San Francisco Community Behavioral Health Services. In addition, the counselor is required to maintain clinical records and to perform minor household repair and cleaning tasks. Candidates must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including some weekend and overnight shifts.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree OR experience may be substituted for the degree requirement, depending on the nature and length of experience.
  • Specific experience in residential treatment and/or knowledge of social rehabilitation is preferred.
  • At least one year's experience in a community mental health program is preferred.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Basic word processing skills.
  • Must demonstrate an acceptable level of maturity, good judgment and emotional stability.
  • Must be able to navigate several flights of stairs and lift and carry 20lb packages multiple times during each work shift.

Progress Foundation is an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse workforce. Bilingual/bicultural, people of color, women, individuals with personal experience as consumers of mental health services and people with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment-qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
Upon receipt of a job offer and before commencement of employment, must submit to a fingerprint check and health screening exam in order to obtain clearance from the State Dept. of Social Services, Community Care Licensing. Valid California driver's license and insurability under the agency's auto insurance policies are preferred. Employment is contingent upon meeting the above minimum qualifications and verification of previous employment and education.
