What is an alternative hair stylist?

Alternative Hair Stylists are professionals who specialize in unconventional and creative hair designs, often using bold colors, unique cutting techniques, and avant-garde styling. They cater to clients seeking non-traditional looks, such as punk, goth, or fantasy-inspired hairstyles. These stylists are skilled in working with a variety of hair types and often incorporate elements like extensions, vivid dyes, and intricate patterns. Their expertise goes beyond standard salon services, focusing on individuality and artistic expression.

What unique challenges might an alternative hair stylist face when working with unconventional hair colors and styles?

Alternative Hair Stylists often work with vibrant colors, dramatic cuts, and creative techniques, which can present unique challenges such as maintaining color vibrancy, preventing hair damage from frequent bleaching, and achieving precise results with complex styles. Staying updated with the latest trends and products is crucial, as is effective communication with clients to understand their vision. Additionally, stylists must be skilled at aftercare education to ensure clients can maintain their look at home, and they often collaborate closely with other creative professionals in fashion or entertainment settings.

Alternative Hair Stylists focus on unique, non-traditional hair styles often in niche markets, requiring specialized training and certifications. Cosmetologists have a broader scope, providing a wide range of beauty services. While both roles involve hair styling, Alternative Hair Stylists cater to specific fashion-forward clients, whereas Cosmetologists serve general beauty needs across various settings.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an alternative hair stylist?

To thrive as an Alternative Hair Stylist, you need a solid foundation in hair cutting, coloring, and styling, often supported by a cosmetology license and specialized training in creative or non-traditional techniques. Familiarity with advanced color products, hair extensions, and tools like clippers, razors, and specialty dyes is typically required. Creativity, strong communication, and adaptability help stylists connect with clients seeking unique and expressive looks. These skills ensure client satisfaction and allow stylists to deliver innovative services in a competitive and trend-driven industry.

Job description

DESCRIPTION
✂ If You're a Talented Stylist Ready to Stop Settling and Start Thriving, We Need to Talk
What You'll Get
  • Real earning potential in the six figures, with leadership that helps you get there
  • Competitive pay: commission, hourly + tips, or guaranteed base + commission, depending on the right fit
  • Ongoing technical, professional, and mindset training
  • Editorial work, teaching, and mentoring opportunities for those who want them
  • 4-day work week with optional Sundays (If these days don't work, let's still talk ;))
  • 2 weeks paid vacation
  • A quarterly wellness bonus
  • A team that genuinely shows up for each other

Is This You?
You're skilled. You love your craft. You're ready for a place that matches your ambition.
You believe the best careers are built together, not alone. You want to grow, earn well, and be part of a team that has your back.
You're done with salons that don't invest in you, don't hold a standard, and don't make you proud to show up.
If that's you, keep reading.
The Real Situation
Hi, I'm Anna. I run Lola Hair Studio, a $1.4M award-winning salon with an amazing team and a culture I protect fiercely.
You don't get to six figures alone. Our top stylists get there by showing up for each other. When the salon wins, we all win.
We invest in our team differently: technical training, but also professional development and mindset work. Who you are matters as much as what you do behind the chair.
The Opportunity
Full-time chair, 34+ hours a week. Color, cuts, blowouts, balayage, highlights, extensions: whatever you love doing, you'll do it here.
Passionate about razor cutting or extensions? Huge plus.
Want more beyond the chair? We also offer editorial and photoshoot opportunities, in-salon education and teaching, and mentoring junior stylists. These are there if you want them, not required.
The Schedule
A 4-day work week with optional Sundays. Full-time income, built-in balance.
What We're Looking For
  • Valid Massachusetts cosmetology license
  • 2+ years of salon experience
  • Strong color and cutting skills; balayage and highlights are your happy place
  • Extensions experience preferred (not required); alternative hair solutions a plus
  • A love of fashion and style. You look and dress the part. Esthetics matter to us.
  • Someone who loves being part of a team and knows that "better together" is how six figures happens here

Who thrives at Lola: someone who takes pride in their work and their teammates, shows up, communicates, and wants to grow technically, professionally, and personally.
One Last Thing
The stylists here are talented, generous, growth-minded people who care about their craft and each other. The bar is high, and that's exactly why people love it here.
If this sounds like home, come find out.
Anna
P.S. Know someone perfect for this chair? Send them our way. The best people come through referrals.
