Alternative Data information

What is an alternative data?

An Alternative Data job involves collecting, analyzing, and interpreting non-traditional data sources—such as satellite imagery, web traffic, or transaction data—to generate insights for financial, investment, or business decisions. Professionals in this field work with data engineering, machine learning, and statistical analysis to derive actionable intelligence. These roles are common in hedge funds, private equity firms, and large corporations looking for a competitive edge through unconventional data sources. Skills required typically include programming (Python, SQL), data wrangling, and domain expertise in finance or technology.

What types of projects or data sources do professionals in alternative data roles typically work with?

Professionals in Alternative Data roles often engage with non-traditional datasets such as satellite imagery, social media trends, credit card transaction records, web scraping data, and sensor or geolocation information to uncover actionable insights. Projects may involve evaluating consumer behavior, forecasting economic activity, or identifying trends that standard financial data might miss. The work frequently requires collaborating with data engineers, analysts, and business strategists to source, clean, and interpret large, unstructured datasets. If you enjoy tackling complex data-driven problems and uncovering new patterns to gain a competitive edge, this is a highly dynamic and impactful role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the alternative data position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Alternative Data role, you need strong analytical skills, experience with data collection and processing, and a background in quantitative disciplines such as finance, statistics, or computer science. Proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, familiarity with data visualization tools, and experience working with big data platforms are essential, with certifications in data analysis or finance being advantageous. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and intellectual curiosity help professionals excel at explaining complex findings and creating actionable insights for stakeholders. These combined abilities are vital for extracting value from unconventional datasets and driving informed business decisions.

Description & Requirements
Who we are:
The Bloomberg Alternative Data team is a fast-growing, high-impact product group building the next generation of data and analytics for company research and intelligence. Our mission is to make alternative data as essential to investment workflows as traditional fundamentals - at global scale.
We sit at the intersection of data science, finance, and product, and are responsible for some of Bloomberg's most differentiated analytics.
What's in it for you:
As a Product Manager on Bloomberg's Alternative Data team, you will create and own a core set of proprietary analytics that translate raw alternative datasets into actionable insights for investors.
In this role, you will lead the development of new proprietary analytics that will provide clients with real-time data-driven insights into company performance. These products sit at the heart of Bloomberg's alternative data strategy and are critical to scaling adoption. You'll work closely with data scientists, engineers, and research partners to design methodologies, validate signals, and deliver analytics used daily by thousands of clients.
The analytics you build will become foundational across Bloomberg - powering Terminal workflows, AI-driven insights, and future data products. This is a highly visible role with the opportunity to shape how alternative data is used by investors and help transform the future of investment research.
We'll trust you to:
  • Collaborate with the product team to drive the strategy, roadmap and requirements for alternative data in the company research workflow applications
  • Own the product vision, roadmap, and execution for proprietary alternative data analytics
  • Partner closely with data science and engineering to define methodologies
  • Translate complex analytical concepts into intuitive, client-facing product experiences embedded in Bloomberg workflows
  • Deeply understand our target user's business, workflows, and objectives to ensure analytics address real investment questions
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration across product, engineering, data science, research, sales, and GTM teams
  • Define success metrics for analytics adoption, usage, and downstream impact on client workflows
  • Act as product owner for one or more Agile teams, managing priorities, trade-offs, and delivery

You'll need to have:
  • 5+ years' experience in financial services, with a data-driven mindset and experience working with alternative data
  • Demonstrated understanding of alternative data and how it is applied to investment research and company analysis
  • Experience working with analytical products, metrics, or models (e.g., estimates, benchmarks, indices, composites, signals)
  • Understanding of the alternative data market landscape and associated use cases/workflows for our products in the market
  • Ability to collaborate closely with data scientists and engineers on complex analytical problems
  • Strong judgment in making trade-offs between analytical sophistication, scalability, and usability
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex problems clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
  • A highly collaborative, ownership-oriented mindset

We'd love to see:
  • Product management experience building data, analytics, or research platforms
  • Experience operating in large organizations with multiple stakeholders
