Job description

Alpha Research amp; Technology, Inc., located east of Sacramento in El Dorado Hills, CA, designs and manufactures ruggedized, cutting-edge and fully integrated airborne and airborne-related Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (C41SR) mission systems. The Company is currently seeking a mid level Mechanical Engineer having responsibility for the design of mechanical and electromechanical components, assemblies for electronic products and systems operating in harsh environments. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Develop mechanical and electromechanical products by studying customer requirements; researching and testing manufacturing and assembly methods and materials. Specific tasks include design of mechanical parts and assemblies, including electronic enclosures, equipment racks, machined metal parts, sheet metal components, and 3D printed parts (additive manufacturing) incorporating electrical and cabling systems into designs. Design involvement will range from concept to product realization using 3D solid modeling software (SolidWorks). Other design aspects include material selection, tolerance analysis, thermal solution design, implementation of human interface elements such as keypads and buttons, and routing of wiring harnesses.
  • Utilize SolidWorks Simulation and Flow Simulation to perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for shock, vibe, thermal, etc.
  • Write and review deliverable analysis documents such as a Stress and Structural Analysis and Environment Control System (ECS) Cooling Analysis.
  • Confirm system and product capabilities by designing feasibility and testing methods; provide support for mechanical related product validation testing, including thermal, shock, vibration, regulatory compliance on MIL Standards and product safety.
  • Coordinates design efforts with internal Systems and Electrical Engineers; interfaces with vendors and in house Machine Shop for prototyping. Generates documentation such as exploded assembly drawings and develops bills of materials (BOMs) in coordination with Production Planner and Manufacturing Engineer.
  • Support formal design reviews. Generate review documentation and presentations; attend internal and customer design review meetings to include customer PDR and CDR reviews.
  • Provide direct support to Manufacturing in a training and advisory role. Provide support for customer issues, including installation and mechanical related operational issues.
Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent required. Minimum of 4 to 6 years of experience in mechanical design related to electronics products and systems to include a proven track record on product development from concept through release to production. Aerospace industry experience preferred. Autocad or Solidworks experience required.
  • Previous experience and demonstrated knowledge of analysis and design process for addressing thermal, shock and vibration aspects of electronic equipment is necessary. Working knowledge of FEA for structural and thermal aspects of electronic enclosure and equipment rack designs required.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge and experience with SolidWorks and Microsoft Office required.
  • Knowledge of low-volume manufacturing techniques for custom sheet metal, machined and 3D printed components, designing with and performing analysis on composite materials and knowledge of Military Test Standards (MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461, RTCA DO-160, etc.) preferred. Familiar with FAA FARS or other relevant industry regulations preferred.
  • Effective administrative, interpersonal and communication skills required. Ability to work as an individual contributor and team player with ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, vendors, customers and employees in writing and verbally.
  • Working knowledge and experience with ISO9001 and/or AS9100 quality requirements preferred.
  • US Citizenship is required; government security clearance is desired, but not required..
