Job SummaryThe Power Electronics System Design Engineer is responsible for architecture, modeling, simulation, hardware design, embedded control algorithms, prototyping, test, technical documentation and customer support of the company's Smart Grid power conversion products. This role involves cross-functional collaboration, driving innovation, and ensuring that all designs meet the highest standards of performance, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

This role will be onsite in Raleigh, NC. Relocation Assistance is available.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to architecture, requirements development and system engineering for new product developments of grid-connected power electronics systems.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., UL, IEEE, IEC, CSA), customer specifications, and critical safety, reliability, and resiliency requirements.
  • Develop system-level controls for power and energy management.
  • Employ modeling and simulation tools to predict and optimize product performance, cost, and efficiency, and validate design decisions.
  • Maintain safe working habits in a high-voltage high-power lab environment.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with mechanical and software engineers, manufacturing, and supply chain staff to develop products and transition them to production.
  • Mentor and provide technical leadership to more junior engineers.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed engineering documentation, including design specifications, system and software requirements, test plans, and technical reports.
  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies to drive innovation and ensure competitive product designs.
  • Actively participate in documenting company owned Intellectual Property as needed.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree, or equivalent experience, in Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience with high-power power electronics systems and converter design
  • Understanding of power converter topologies such as DC/DC and AC/DC converters, inverter systems, or multi-level converter architectures
  • Knowledge of medium-voltage and high-voltage electrical systems, insulation coordination, protection, and safety practices.
  • Experience with DSPs, microcontrollers, and/or FPGAs for embedded control of power electronics systems.
  • Experience using simulation/analysis tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PSIM or PLECS.
  • Experience with 3-phase grid-connected electrical systems.
  • Hands-on experience with system- and subsystem-level performance validation testing.
  • Strong problem-solving and effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work safely around medium-voltage and high-energy laboratory environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with reliability engineering practices.
  • Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., UL, IEEE, IEC, CSA) and compliance requirements for AC grid-connected systems and high-power DC systems.
  • Experience with DC circuit protection component selection and coordination.
  • Experience with energy storage systems, DC microgrids, renewable energy systems, EV charging, or data center power infrastructure.
  • Experience with medium-voltage (kilovolt-plus level) systems, circuits, and components.
  • Experience with designing printed circuit board assemblies.
  • Experience with HIL simulations for power conversion systems.
  • Working experience with power semiconductor devices, especially GaN FETs and SiC FETs.
