Job description

Position Overview

Align offers a wide variety of services centered around the data center white space. We are a technology solution provider specialized in data center white space design and fit outs. Our services span the full lifecycle of white space delivery, including space planning, overhead support systems, electrical power distribution, redundancy and power striping strategies, conduit and cable pathway infrastructure, and low-voltage structured cabling.

We are seeking an Electrical Engineering Field Project Manager with deep expertise in the design, build-out and commissioning of hyperscale data center white space electrical systems. This role is responsible for translating design intent and client requirements into safe, reliable, and high-quality field execution. You will be onsite daily, leading subcontractors, managing schedules, ensuring quality control, and owning the successful delivery of electrical power distribution systems from upstream critical equipment to IT loads.

This is a hands-on project manager role for a technically strong professional who can both design electrical distribution solutions and manage their construction in the field.

Location: This home base for this position will be Northern Virginia. Some travel may be required, but most work will be onsite at local data centers.
Compensation: This is a full-time salaried role offering $140,000-$170,000 commensurate with experience, full benefits, project bonuses, paid travel, and advanced training.

Key Responsibilities

Project & Construction Management

  • Own project scope, quality, schedule, and budget for data center white space electrical construction projects.
  • Serve as the primary on-site representative, coordinating daily activities with electrical subcontractors.
  • Interface directly with general contractors and subcontractors during bidding, award, execution, close-out, and punch-list phases.
  • Monitor and update construction schedules, communicate progress and risks, and manage client expectations.
  • Identify, negotiate, and document scope changes, change orders, and justified schedule extensions.
  • Drive troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for construction and equipment-related issues.

Field Execution & Trade Coordination

  • Oversee electrical subcontractors and ensure proper sequencing and trade stacking across all disciplines.
  • Lead overall construction quality control, perform field quality inspections, and enforce Align and client standards.
  • Verify installation accuracy and readiness for testing, commissioning, and turnover.
  • Support commissioning activities and resolve construction-related issues identified during testing.
  • Ensure installed systems match approved designs and that final "as-built" conditions meet Align, client, and engineering standards.

Documentation & Standards

  • Prepare and maintain project documentation including statements of work, budgets, schedules, status reports, design documents, drawing markups, and commissioning deliverables.
  • Update and maintain internal design specifications, drawings, and standards based on lessons learned and evolving best practices.
  • Support procurement activities including scope definition, bid clarification, and vendor coordination.

Electrical Design Support

  • Gather and translate client electrical requirements into design criteria and collaborate with electrical engineering firms and electrical contractors to finalize designs and ensure alignment with client requirements, codes, and standards.
  • Help with the design of electrical power distribution systems for hyperscale data center white space projects including (but not limited to):
  • Whip, RPP, busway systems, PDU's, STS, Catcher Systems
  • Power redundancy and distribution strategies from PDUs to cabinet receptacles
  • Overhead and underfloor electrical pathways
  • Develop conceptual designs, requirements, specifications, estimates, and bills of materials (BOMs) for white space power distribution systems.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related engineering discipline OR 5+ years of equivalent construction management experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing large, complex, mission-critical electrical construction projects, with a strong focus on data centers (ideally working with 10+ Megawatt sized projects).
  • Must have demonstrated expertise in data center electrical topology and a strong understanding of electrical principles related to data centers
  • Experience with the commissioning of electrical systems and overseeing installation of hyperscale data center white space electrical power distribution systems (distributed redundant, catcher, block redundant)
  • Proven ability to:
    • Gather client electrical requirements
    • Develop BOMs and estimates for white space electrical systems (e.g., Whips, RPPs, Connector Types, Busway)
    • Lead electrical design coordination with engineers and contractors
    • Oversee field installation through final as-built verification
  • Possess the experience and knowledge to appropriately size breakers and feeder cables, as well as understand ampacity and required wire size
  • Experience with power monitoring and power management systems.
  • Strong general contractor and vendor management experience, including RFPs, bidding, change orders, RFIs, submittals, invoicing, and quality control.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications across disciplines.

  • Basic conceptual MEP knowledge of white space fit-outs (telecom/LVC, space planning, containment, conveyance, liquid cooling) preferred, with electrical as the core discipline required.
  • Experience as a licensed electrician would be a plus
  • Proficiency with Procore or similar construction management platforms.
  • Demonstrated value engineering experience-delivering cost savings without compromising reliability or quality.
  • Professional certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE), LEED, and/or Certified Construction Manager (CCM).
