Job description

Overview
We are seeking a full-time Aircraft Performance Engineer Intern at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for applying aircraft performance principles and knowledge of regulatory requirements to develop and maintain aircraft performance data modules that support Garmin's industry leading aviation software solutions. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams, assisting in the development, enhancement, testing and validation of aircraft performance software while contributing to innovative solutions that help pilots and operators make informed flight planning decisions.
Essential Functions
  • Apply basic aircraft performance and weight & balance principles applied to all fixed wing category aircraft (including applicable 14 CFR Chapters)
  • Research, analyze, and compile aircraft performance data from a variety of technical sources for integration into Garmin aviation products and services
  • Develop and improve processes, tools, and methodologies used to create and manage aircraft performance technologies
  • Learn to develop software in selected languages for Garmin's Aircraft Performance and Weight & Balance solutions
  • Collaborate with software engineers, pilots, and quality teams to support the continuous enhancement of Garmin's Aircraft Performance solutions

Basic Qualifications
  • Pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field with exposure to software engineering concepts
  • Excellent academics (minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA)
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to learn complex technical concepts and apply them in a software development environment

Desired Qualifications
  • Understanding of aircraft performance algorithms to compute maximum takeoff and landing weights, takeoff and landing field lengths, V-speeds, climb gradients, etc. and assess effects of meteorological conditions, obstacle clearance requirements and terrain geometry on such calculations
  • Exposure to flight planning algorithms that calculate fuel burn, flight time, and route performance based on aircraft capabilities and environmental conditions
  • Knowledge of aircraft's weight and balance concepts, including center-of-gravity calculations and fuel burn modeling
  • Familiarity with software solutions that support compliance with aircraft performance regulations and certification requirements
  • Experience with one or more of the following programming languages: C, Python, SQL
  • Experience with FAA Part 23 and Part 25 Aircraft Certification requirements
  • FAA Airmen Certificate
