Job description

Organization Overview

Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) envisions a nation where marginalized children flourish, leaders prioritize their well-being, and communities wield the power to ensure they thrive. CDF’s mission is to build community, so young people grow up with dignity, hope, and joy. CDF core values are Justice, Compassion, Equity, Trust, and Love.

We serve and advocate for the largest, most diverse generation in America: the 74 million children and youth under the age of 18 and 30 million young adults under the age of 25, with particular attention to those living in poverty and communities of color. CDF partners with policymakers, aligned organizations and funders in this service. The Children’s Defense Fund is the only national, multi-issue advocacy organization working at the intersection of child well-being and racial justice by wielding the moral authority of programmatic proximity and community organizing to inform public policy. Position Summary

The Program/Marketing Senior Coordinator supports the Managing Director in advancing CDF Alex Haley Farm as a dynamic training ground and space for spiritual renewal—a meeting ground for organizers, young advocates, policymakers, and servant leaders committed to children, youth, and families. Rooted in CDF’s values and an ethos of radical hospitality, this role helps translate the Farm’s mission into excellent day-to-day execution through coordinated communications, thoughtful visitor experience support, and strong operational follow-through.

Working closely with CDF communications, the Senior Coordinator helps plan, promote, and document convenings and programs on “The Farm,” including supporting calendars and outreach, coordinating program materials and participant communications, and assisting with on-site logistics and vendor needs as assigned. The Senior Coordinator also supports marketing and outreach that invites values-aligned groups to host retreats, convenings, and educational experiences at Alex Haley Farm—including nonprofit, faith-based, education, and community partners—and helps maintain audience-ready content that communicates the Farm’s story and impact to both prospective renters and potential donors, ensuring consistent, values-aligned messaging across channels.

Responsibilities:

Project & Program Coordination

  • Support planning, scheduling, and execution of cross-functional project and program workplans, timelines, and deliverables.

  • Assist with coordinating materials for team meetings, retreats, and events held at Alex Haley Farm.

  • Support onboarding, communications, and day-to-day coordination with consultants, advisors, and partner organizations.

  • Maintain clear, timely communication with cross-sector partners to integrate project and Farm-based resources into events and learning spaces.

Marketing & Promotion

  • Collaborate with internal communications and external partners to develop and implement coordinated promotional plans across digital, print, and event-based channels.

  • Create, schedule, and distribute audience-ready content (e.g., posts, short videos, graphics, email copy) that elevates CDF Alex Haley Farm, its convenings, and its availability for values-aligned retreats and rentals.

  • Support outreach to new media, speakers, and community messengers to broaden reach with priority audiences, including nonprofit, faith-based, education, and community partners and potential donors.

  • Organize and execute book promotions and documentary screenings at CDF Alex Haley Farm aligned with grant deliverables, including author/filmmaker engagement, outreach materials, and day-of-event logistics.

Event & On-Site Support

  • Assist with event and program logistics from planning through closeout, including run-of-show support, participant communications, room and materials set-up, and vendor coordination as assigned.

  • Help uphold a consistently positive visitor experience aligned with CDF values and an ethos of radical hospitality.

  • Support coordination of exhibit installations, screenings, and other program activations at Alex Haley Farm and partner venues, including transport, set-up, and documentation needs.

Content & Resource Support

  • Assist with organizing, digitizing, and maintaining project assets and archival materials in accessible, well-documented systems.

  • Support drafting, editing, and distribution of program-facing resources and educational materials, in coordination with project leads.

  • Help collect, organize, and incorporate community-submitted stories, testimonies, and feedback into project deliverables as appropriate.

Evaluation & Reporting

  • Support collection and organization of feedback, survey data, and engagement metrics to inform continuous improvement and end-of-project evaluation.

  • Prepare periodic updates, summaries, and progress reports for internal partners and external stakeholders as requested.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.

  • 2–5 years of relevant experience in program/project coordination, events, and/or communications.

  • Understanding and commitment to the vision and mission of the Children’s Defense Fund, Alex Haley Farm, and CDF Freedom Schools®.

  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to improving the lives of children and their families.

  • Ability to support and collaborate with colleagues in addressing organization-wide goals.

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to be a team player in a fast-paced working environment.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work without close supervision.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with professionalism and accuracy.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to meet tight deadlines.

  • High level of maturity and ability to interact effectively with diverse constituencies.
