Airflow Internship information

What is an Airflow internship?

An Airflow internship is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience working with Apache Airflow, an open-source platform used to programmatically author, schedule, and monitor data workflows. Interns typically assist with building, managing, and optimizing data pipelines, learning how to orchestrate complex data processes in real-world environments. The internship helps develop technical skills in Python, workflow management, and cloud services, preparing individuals for data engineering or related roles. It is usually offered by companies with significant data processing needs, such as tech firms, financial institutions, or consulting companies.

What types of projects do Airflow interns typically work on, and how does this experience contribute to their professional development?

Airflow interns often work on real-world data pipeline projects, such as automating data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes or optimizing workflow scheduling for business analytics. These projects provide hands-on experience with Apache Airflow, Python programming, and cloud-based data tools, allowing interns to build practical skills in data engineering. Collaboration is common, as interns usually work alongside data engineers and analysts, gaining insight into team-based problem-solving and best practices. This experience not only strengthens technical expertise but also prepares interns for future roles in data engineering or DevOps.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Airflow intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Airflow Intern, you generally need a foundational understanding of Python programming, data engineering concepts, and familiarity with workflow orchestration principles. Experience or coursework with Apache Airflow, SQL, and cloud platforms like AWS or GCP is often expected, along with version control tools such as Git. Strong problem-solving skills, curiosity, and effective communication help interns collaborate and quickly learn in dynamic technical environments. These competencies are crucial for efficiently automating data pipelines and supporting the seamless flow of information within data-driven teams.

What is the difference between Airflow Internship vs Data Engineer Internship?

AspectAirflow InternshipData Engineer Internship
Required SkillsKnowledge of Apache Airflow, Python, ETL workflowsProgramming (Python, SQL), data modeling, ETL pipelines
Work EnvironmentData teams, cloud platforms, automation projectsData infrastructure, database management, big data tools
Industry UsageData pipeline automation, workflow orchestrationData storage, processing, and analysis

Both internships involve working with data technologies, but an Airflow Internship focuses specifically on workflow orchestration using Apache Airflow, while a Data Engineer Internship covers broader data infrastructure and pipeline development. Candidates should have some programming and data skills, with the choice depending on their interest in automation versus data architecture.

Job description

Job Details:Job Description:

The world is transforming - and so is Intel. Intel is a company of bold and curious inventors and problem solvers who create some of the most astounding technology advancements and experiences in the world. With a legacy of relentless innovation and a commitment to bring smart, connected devices to every person on Earth, our diverse and brilliant teams are continually searching for tomorrow's technology and revel in the challenge that changing the world for the better brings. We work every single day to design and manufacture silicon products that empower people's digital lives. Come join us and do something wonderful.

We are seeking an Infrastructure and DevOps Architect to design, implement, and maintain secure, scalable infrastructure and deployment pipelines that underpin our suite of data science and decision support applications. This role sits at the intersection of software development, security, and cloud operations - owning the reliability, security posture, and delivery velocity of our platform.
A strong security mindset is essential, as the team is actively preparing to handle data of increasing sensitivity, making the establishment and enforcement of secure infrastructure practices a foundational expectation of this role. Cross-functional communication is equally critical: this person must be able to translate infrastructure and security concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders across development, data science, and security disciplines.
About the Team
We're a team of data scientists and application developers who work in tandem to develop self-service decision support tools. We support applications essential to the strategic design and tactical execution of semiconductor manufacturing. We are a vibrant and innovative team with a strong customer focus and proven value which drives significant impact to Intel. We also maintain a strong technical presence in prestigious internal platforms and publications, as well as external publications.
As we grow, we are investing in the infrastructure and security foundations that will allow our applications and data capabilities to scale responsibly - and this role is central to that investment.

Qualifications:

You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates. Experience listed below would be obtained through a combination of your degree, research and or relevant previous job and or internship experiences.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of industry/post-university experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Information Security, or a related field.

  • 3+ years of experience administering and troubleshooting Linux-based operating systems, networking fundamentals, DNS, firewalls, and common network protocols.

  • 3+ years of experience using Python and/or Bash scripting for automation, operational workflows, and API integrations, including the ability to read and troubleshoot application code.

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP).

  • 2+ years of experience working with container technologies such as Docker, including container packaging and deployment concepts.

  • 2+ years of experience working with CI/CD concepts and automation platforms such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins.

  • 3+ years of experience using Git for source control, change tracking, and collaborative development workflows.

  • 2+ years of experience using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, OpenTofu, Pulumi, or Ansible for infrastructure provisioning and configuration management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Kubernetes-native workflow orchestration (Argo Workflows, Airflow, or Prefect) for large-scale batch and job-based compute.

  • Master's with at least 3+ years of relevant industry/post-university experience OR PhD & 2+ years of experience.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.

  • Proficient in Terraform for cloud infrastructure-as-code.

  • Ability to work independently in an environment with limited centralized platform support, designing and documenting reference patterns rather than consuming them.

  • Advanced English level with strong cross-functional communication skills; ability to convey technical concepts clearly across development, data science, and security disciplines.

  • Familiarity with Prometheus/Mimir or equivalent metrics pipelines and Grafana and Loki for observability.

  • Experience with container and IaC security scanning in CI/CD (Trivy, Wiz, or equivalent), image signing, and vulnerability remediation workflows.

  • Experience with FastAPI or Flask for backend web API development.

  • MongoDB, MariaDB, MySQL or NoSQL database experience.

  • Experience with Azure Blob/Files storage and Kubernetes persistent storage patterns.
