DESCRIPTION
Michael Baker International's (MBI) Aviation Infrastructure Practice is seeking a Full-Time (Minimum 40hrs per week) Airfield Electrical Associate to join our dedicated Airfield Electrical Practice! The Airfield Electrical Associate will provide design expertise, design oversight, leadership, and mentorship for the junior designers. The Airfield Electrical Associate may support the operations managers, project managers, and marketing team while pursuing opportunities for new work.
MBI's Airfield Electrical Practice brings deep expertise in products, standards, and installation practices to deliver innovative, cost-effective, and schedule-conscious design solutions. We support a full range of airport operations from small regional facilities to large civilian and military airfields with a focus on reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
The candidate will serve as primary design and production staff with the future career path of becoming a Senior Electrical Associate / Electrical Engineer/ Senior Electrical Engineer. The candidate will be expected to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities under direct oversight of project engineers and project managers.
- Develop assessments, drawings, specifications, reports, calculations, quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and other deliverables for assigned projectsin a variety of technical knowledge areas.
- Perform complex analysis, calculations, design, evaluation, and inspection of Power, Lighting, Telecommunications, and Special Systems to support project objectives.
- Lead development of airfield electrical designs for airfield development projects, including coordination, design, specification, and layout airfield ground lighting systems, signs, navigational aids, and airfield electrical vault equipment.
- Coordinate design scope with drawing legends, layout drawings, details, specifications, pay items, and takeoff estimates.
- Cross coordinate electrical designs with other disciplines and project elements such as pavement, marking, grading, drainage, etc to resolve design challenges, conflicts, and other concerns.
- Perform continuous Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC) functions as necessary to ensure accuracy and completeness of designs and deliverables.
- Assist project management and project engineers to coordinate design scope and construction schedules with airport stakeholders, FAA, and design team partners.
- Perform various construction administration and construction management tasks such as submittal reviews, providing advisory information, performing site surveys, and contributing to engineering studies.
- Represent MBI with professionalism during internal and external meetings involving airfield electrical designs.
- Support the airfield electrical practice technical lead, engineers, and designers to develop and maintain department design standards.
- In conjunction with project managers and senior airfield electrical engineering staff, monitor project production and schedules to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
- Effectively provide guidance and informal training to less experienced personnel.
- Perform other design and production tasks assigned by practice technical lead, discipline managers, senior engineers, and project managers.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The candidate will be expected to demonstrate the following essential skills:
- Lead development of survey-accurate drawings in AutoCAD Civil 3D using pipe network structures, blocks, and other integrated features.
- Develop professionally written, properly formatted, grammatically correct, spell-checked, technically accurate reports, FAA/UFGS specifications, notes, and other written content in support of project deliverables.
- Develop accurate quantity takeoffs, estimates, and various calculations using Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel, and other tools.
- Effectively communicate engineering concepts to project managers and non-engineering staff.
- Find, Understand, and Apply FAA Advisory Circulars, FAA Engineering Briefs, FAA Orders, and other FAA Standards.
- Find, Understand, and Apply Whole Building Design Guide (WBDG) Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC).
- Find, Understand, and Apply NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC) and other NFPA codes.
- Find, Understand, and Apply Building Codes such as IBC, IECC, and local amendments.
- Understand and Apply Client Guidelines and Design Requirements.
- Participate and Follow Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC) Processes.
- Understand and Apply airfield electrical engineering concepts including, but not limited to, Airfield Lighting Controls, Parallel Voltage Circuits vs Series Constant Current Circuits, Single Phase vs 3 Phase Circuits, Power Factor, Grounding, Lightning Protection, Generators and Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), Voltage Drop, Demand Factors, Circuit Ampacity, Circuit Protection, and Insulation Resistance.
- Understand Civil Engineering Concepts including, but not limited to, Part-77 Imaginary Surfaces, Pavement Design, Grading, Drainage, and Construction Safety Phasing.
- Required: Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electrical Engineering or Higher in engineering or related technical field from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET)
- Software Knowledge: Microsoft Office Applications, Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit (Preferred), Acuity Visual and / or AGI 32 Lighting Modeling and Calculation Software (Preferred), Bluebeam Revu (Preferred), SpecsIntact (Preferred).
EDUCATION:
The candidate must meet the following required educational requirements for this position. Additional education is preferred.
LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS:
- Preferred: Engineering Intern (EI) or Engineer In Training (EIT)
- Preferred: Licenses Professional Engineer (PE) and ability to obtain additional licensure in multiple states by comity/reciprocity.
- Preferred: NCEES Record
- Preferred: AAAE Airfield Certified Employee (ACE) in Airfield Lighting
- Preferred: BICSI Registered Communication Distribution Designer
EXPERIENCE:
The candidate must meet the following experience requirements.
- Required: At least three (3) years of technical experience in the Architecture, Engineering, & Construction (AEC) industry
- Preferred: At least three (3) years of experience with specific focus on applications dealing with airfield lighting design and/or construction.
COMPENSATION
The approximate compensation range for this position is $82,004 to $129,185. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
