SUMMARY
JOB DESCRIPTION
This is a graduate student position responsible for teaching effective writing strategies to undergraduate and graduate students, both in the classroom and in one-on-one tutoring settings. The Writing GTA develops their scholarship as a researcher, presenter, and facilitator, gaining experience in instructional delivery, tutor training, and academic support program development. Reports to the AARC Director, with additional supervision by the Program Director for Writing and Liberal Arts.
QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum education required for admittance as a graduate student at Stephen F. Austin State University. Coursework or background in rhetoric/composition, English, education, or a related field is preferred.
No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided. Prior experience tutoring, teaching, or working in a writing center or academic support setting is preferred, including familiarity with writing center pedagogy (e.g., non-directive tutoring methods, higher-order vs. lower-order concerns). Experience with citation management tools or plagiarism-detection software is preferred. Experience training, mentoring, or supervising peers is preferred. Experience developing or using AI-related instructional materials is preferred.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Serves as the primary tutor for graduate-level writing tutoring, provides individualized support across disciplines.
  2. Plans and facilitates writing workshops for students and/or tutors.
  3. Assists in managing writing tutors, including scheduling, training support, and day-to-day oversight, in coordination with the Program Director for Writing and Liberal Arts.
  4. Teaches best practices in writing, research, and documentation to tutors as part of tutor training.
  5. Serves as point-person for communication with the writing tutor staff, as directed by the Program Director for Writing and Liberal Arts.
  6. Delivers presentations and facilitates training sessions for tutors, staff, or campus partners as needed.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESThe individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  1. Knowledge of standard American English grammar and writing conventions.
  2. Skill in APA, MLA, and/or Chicago style manuals, with the ability to teach and troubleshoot style questions across formats.
  3. Skill in written and verbal communication.
  4. Ability to utilize AI writing tools and their appropriate use in academic writing and tutoring - able to teach students and tutors how to use AI as a study aid rather than a shortcut.
  5. Ability to be comfortable and confident when presenting to groups and facilitating training or workshop-style sessions.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANT

A student must have clear or provisional admission to the graduate school and the academic unit, be in good academic standing, and be enrolled for at least six semester credit hours (SCH) of graduate courses to be eligible for a graduate assistantship during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for a graduate assistantship during the summer, a student must be enrolled for at least three semester credit hours (SCH) of graduate courses.
Graduate assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a student assistant, staff employee or adjunct faculty at the same time that they are employed as a graduate assistant. All graduate assistant appointments combined should not exceed the maximum FTE of 0.50.
