An AI Startup job involves working at a company focused on developing artificial intelligence technologies, products, or services. Roles can vary widely, including engineering, data science, product management, and business development. Employees in AI startups often work in fast-paced environments, solving complex problems with cutting-edge AI models and tools. These roles typically require adaptability, technical expertise, and a willingness to innovate quickly.

What does the typical day-to-day work look like at an AI startup?

At an AI startup, your days are often fast-paced and varied, involving tasks like brainstorming new product features, coding algorithms, reviewing data sets, meeting with cross-functional teams, and testing proofs of concept. Team members frequently collaborate across roles—engineers, data scientists, and even product managers may work closely together in a flat structure. You can expect to rapidly prototype and iterate on ideas, directly impacting the company's growth and direction. This dynamic environment is ideal for those who enjoy hands-on innovation and learning in a close-knit, high-energy team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the AI startup position, and why are they important?

Succeeding in an AI startup requires strong programming skills, knowledge of machine learning principles, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch, cloud platforms like AWS or Google Cloud, and, in some cases, relevant certifications can be highly advantageous. Adaptability, creative problem-solving, and effective teamwork distinguish exceptional contributors in these dynamic environments. These skills ensure that you can quickly develop innovative solutions and pivot as the startup evolves.

How do I start a career in AI?

To start a career in AI, develop a strong foundation in mathematics, programming, and data analysis, often through degrees in computer science, data science, or related fields. Gain experience with machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, and build a portfolio of projects to demonstrate your skills. Internships, online courses, and certifications can also help you enter the AI industry.

Job description

About Overwatch Imaging:
Overwatch Imaging is an imagery intelligence technology company working to bring sensor autonomy to time-critical airborne search, detection, tracking and monitoring missions. Our Automated Sensor Operator (ASO) software, native to our own line of purpose-built Smart Sensors and as an upgrade for airborne video gimbal platforms, brings Superhuman Vision and Workload Reduction to users of real-time imagery intelligence systems. We fundamentally believe that modern edge processing and AI-enabled autonomy can perform an important set of time-critical imagery intelligence missions better, faster and more safely than humans can alone.
Founded in 2016 in Hood River, Oregon, we support private sector companies as well as federal, state and local agencies around the world with missions ranging from wildfire mapping and disaster response to law enforcement, border security, maritime domain awareness and tactical intelligence.
About this Role:
Overwatch is seeking a Test Automation Engineer to own and evolve how we validate edge-deployed imaging systems across software, Jetson-based compute, and hardware-integrated sensor payloads-through automation, tooling, and AI-assisted testing. This position is based onsite, with flexibility for up to 2 days of remote work per week.
What You'll Do:
End-to-End System Testing
  • Design and execute tests across UI, APIs, backend, and Jetson-based systems.
  • Translate customer issues into reproducible test cases.
  • Define expected behavior, tolerances, and failure conditions.
  • Identify edge cases and integration gaps.

Test Automation & Tooling
  • Build and maintain automated regression and integration tests.
  • Develop tools for:
  • Test orchestration and execution.
  • Log collection, parsing, and failure detection.
  • Test telemetry and reporting.
  • Expand coverage while reducing manual testing.
  • Integrate automation into CI/CD pipelines

Hardware Integration Validation
  • Validate software that runs on Jetson devices and interfaces with in-house smart-sensors and third-party payloads.
  • Reproduce and debug software ↔ hardware issues.
  • Turn integration failures into repeatable tests.
  • Maintain and support Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) setups.

Field Issue Troubleshooting
  • Investigate and reproduce customer-reported issues.
  • Build tools and workflows for faster debugging (logs, replay, diagnostics).
  • Feed findings back into automated test coverage.

AI-Assisted Testing
  • Apply AI where it improves validation:
  • UI testing (e.g., Playwright).
  • Log analysis and anomaly detection.
  • Evolve testing toward more adaptive, intelligent systems.

What Success Looks Like
  • Critical workflows are automated and continuously validated.
  • Integration issues are caught early and are reproducible.
  • Customer issues are faster to diagnose and resolve.
  • Testing scales with reduced manual effort.

Who You Are
  • 5+ years of experience in test automation and hardware/software validation
  • Experience with system, integration, or embedded testing.
  • Comfortable working with software deployed to edge hardware (Jetson devices or similar).
  • Strong systems thinking across software and hardware.
  • Experience building test automation, tools, or frameworks.
  • Proficient in Python and Linux environments.
  • Bonus: Experience with HIL testing, Playwright, or AI-assisted testing.

Summary
This role combines system-level testing, automation, and real-world debugging. You will build the infrastructure and workflows that ensure our software and hardware systems work reliably in the field.
What We Offer
  • Growth Opportunities: As a team member of a true startup, you will learn by doing and shape our future. The opportunities are limitless for those who want to grow their career.
  • Impact Opportunity: We work on missions that matter to keep people safe and make the world better, and we do it at the speed of a startup.
  • Late Start Wednesday: A weekly block to have focus time away from meetings and calls
  • Time Off: Generous unlimited PTO policy
  • Stock Options
  • Medical and Dental premiums 100% covered
  • 401K Matching
