What is an AI scientist?

AI Scientists are professionals who research, design, and develop artificial intelligence systems and algorithms. They work on creating models that enable computers to perform tasks such as learning, reasoning, and problem-solving, often using techniques from machine learning and deep learning. AI Scientists collaborate with engineers and data scientists to build applications ranging from natural language processing to computer vision. Their work often involves experimenting with new approaches, publishing research, and staying updated with the latest advancements in AI.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AI scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AI Scientist, you need a strong background in computer science, mathematics, and machine learning, typically supported by an advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in a related field. Experience with programming languages like Python, deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch, and familiarity with data management tools are essential. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly set standout candidates apart. These skills ensure successful development, implementation, and communication of innovative AI solutions to address real-world challenges.

What are some typical challenges AI scientists face when deploying models into production environments?

AI Scientists often encounter challenges when transitioning models from research to production, such as ensuring model robustness, handling data drift, and integrating with existing systems. Collaboration with data engineers and DevOps teams is essential to address scalability, latency, and monitoring issues. Additionally, maintaining model performance over time requires ongoing evaluation and retraining, making strong communication and cross-functional teamwork vital for successful deployment.

What is the difference between Ai Scientist vs Data Scientist?

AspectAi ScientistData Scientist
Required CredentialsDegree in Computer Science, AI, or related fields; knowledge of machine learning and deep learningDegree in Statistics, Computer Science, or related fields; strong analytical skills
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, AI development teams, tech companiesBusiness analytics, data analysis teams, consulting firms
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, AI startups, research institutionsFinance, healthcare, marketing, e-commerce

Ai Scientists focus on developing and improving artificial intelligence models and algorithms, often working on cutting-edge research. Data Scientists analyze large datasets to extract insights and support decision-making. While both roles require strong technical skills and knowledge of machine learning, Ai Scientists are more involved in creating AI systems, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and interpretation.

How do I become an AI scientist?

To become an AI scientist, you typically need a strong educational background in computer science, mathematics, or related fields, often including a master's or Ph.D. in AI, machine learning, or data science. Developing skills in programming languages like Python, understanding algorithms, and gaining experience with tools such as TensorFlow or PyTorch are essential. Gaining practical experience through research, projects, or internships also helps build expertise in AI development and deployment.

How much money do AI scientists make?

AI scientists typically earn a median salary ranging from $100,000 to $150,000 annually, with experienced professionals and those in senior roles earning over $200,000. Salaries vary based on experience, education, location, and industry, and many AI scientists also receive benefits such as bonuses and stock options.

What does an AI scientist do?

An AI scientist researches and develops artificial intelligence algorithms and models to solve complex problems. They often work with machine learning, deep learning, and data analysis tools, and typically require strong programming skills and knowledge of mathematics. Job description

About Mistral

Mistral provides full-stack AI solutions: from frontier models to developer tools, applications, and compute. We partner with enterprises tackling the hardest problems—across high-stakes industries like finance, manufacturing, defense, healthcare, and the public sector—co-creating customized AI systems that they can run on their terms.

We are a dynamic, collaborative team passionate about AI and its potential to transform society. Our diverse workforce thrives in competitive environments and is committed to driving innovation. Our teams are distributed between Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. We are creative, low-ego and team-spirited.

The Role

As an AI Scientist, you will push the boundaries of AI by developing and scaling cutting-edge models. This role exists to advance Mistral’s mission of democratizing frontier intelligence, enabling businesses and consumers to benefit from open, high-impact AI systems. You will collaborate with a global, cross-functional team to design, build, and deploy models that solve real-world problems across reasoning, code, and multimodal applications. Your work will directly shape how AI integrates into daily life and enterprise operations.

What will you do
  • Research and develop novel methods to push the frontier of large language models
  • Work across use cases (e.g reasoning, code, agents) and modalities (e.g text, image and speech)
  • Build tooling and infrastructure to allow training, evaluation and analysis of AI models at scale
  • Work cross-functionally with other scientists, engineers and product teams to ship AI systems which have a real-world impact
What we're Looking for
  • You are a highly proficient software engineer in at least one programming language (Python or other, e.g. Rust, Go, Java)
  • You have hands-on experience with AI frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, JAX) or distributed systems (e.g. Ray, Kubernetes)
  • You have high engineering competence. This means being able to design complex software and make it usable in production
  • You are a self-starter, autonomous and a team player
Now, it would be ideal if
  • You have hands-on experience with training large transformer models in a distributed fashion
  • You are able to navigate the full MLOps stack, for instance, fine-tuning, evaluation and deployment
  • You have a strong publication record in a relevant scientific domain

Note that this is not an exhaustive or necessary list of requirements. Please consider applying if you believe you have the skills to contribute to Mistral's mission. We value profile and experience diversity.
