What is AI project management?

An AI Project Management job involves overseeing projects that develop and implement artificial intelligence solutions. AI project managers coordinate teams, manage timelines, ensure resource allocation, and address risks to deliver AI-driven initiatives successfully. They work closely with data scientists, engineers, and business stakeholders to align AI projects with company goals. Strong technical knowledge, leadership skills, and an understanding of AI methodologies are essential for success in this role.

What are some typical challenges faced by AI project managers, and how can they be addressed?

AI Project Managers often encounter challenges such as managing interdisciplinary teams, aligning project goals with rapidly evolving technologies, and ensuring ethical and compliant deployment of AI solutions. Handling shifting priorities, budget constraints, and complex data requirements can also be demanding. Successful AI Project Managers address these challenges by promoting clear communication, establishing realistic timelines, maintaining flexibility, and staying up to date on industry best practices. Collaboration with data scientists, engineers, and business stakeholders is key to proactively identifying and mitigating risks while delivering project goals. Regular training and an openness to learning also help in navigating the unique complexities of AI-driven projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in AI project management, and why are they important?

To thrive in AI Project Management, you need a solid background in project management principles, a strong understanding of artificial intelligence concepts, and preferably a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Asana, or Microsoft Project and certifications such as PMP or Agile are commonly required, along with experience in AI platforms and data analytics systems. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities set top candidates apart, as does the capacity to bridge technical and business teams. These skills are critical to ensure projects stay on track, meet stakeholder expectations, and deliver effective AI solutions.

How do I become an AI project manager?

To become an AI project manager, you typically need a background in project management, often with a certification like PMP or Agile. Knowledge of artificial intelligence concepts, data science, and experience managing technical teams are also important. Developing skills in communication, leadership, and familiarity with AI tools and frameworks can enhance your qualifications.

How much does an AI project manager make?

An AI project manager's salary typically ranges from $80,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in AI tools and methodologies can earn higher compensation, often exceeding $150,000.

Is project management a good career even with AI?

Project management remains a valuable career as AI tools can automate routine tasks but do not replace the need for human oversight, leadership, and decision-making. Skills in communication, risk management, and familiarity with project management software like MS Project or Jira are essential, and continuous learning is important to adapt to technological changes.

A well-capitalized construction and manufacturing company in the Southeast is hiring an entry-level Assistant Project Manager to join their Program Management team.  This role is built for someone early in their career who is organized, detail-driven, and ready to own a real workload on day one — not sit in the background. The company offers a defined advancement path, support for licenses and certifications, and a front-row seat to one of the more innovative delivery models in the construction industry right now.

  • Full benefits package: health, dental, and vision insurance; FSA; paid time off; short-term and long-term disability; life insurance; 401(k)
  • Support for professional licenses and certifications
  • Defined career advancement pathways within a growing Program Management group
  • Birmingham, Alabama — 25-50% travel to active job sites (primarily Southeast and Texas)

Overview:

Program Coordination:

  • Maintain project schedules, milestone logs, and coordination artifacts across assigned programs
  • Track manufacturing and subcontractor buyout status; flag slippage to the Project Manager
  • Organize and route project information — drawings, specs, RFIs, submittals, and change directives — to the right people at the right time
  • Support documentation for module transfers and project handoffs
  • Participate in weekly coordination meetings; contribute to agendas and minutes
  • Assist in project closeout: document organization, punch list tracking, and warranty turnover

Field Support:

  • Provide on-site support during module installation, punch, and key construction milestones
  • Assist with on-site material receiving and tracking
  • Support subcontractor onboarding and orientation
  • Generate safety and quality observation reports
  • Maintain accurate on-site documentation: daily logs, photos, and issue tracking
  • Assist the Field PM with client progress reporting

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (equivalent experience considered)
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience in construction, manufacturing, or project management
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Working proficiency in Microsoft Excel — formulas, sorting and filtering, basic pivot tables
  • Familiarity with at least one scheduling platform: MS Project, Primavera P6, or Smartsheet
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and Bluebeam
  • Willingness and ability to travel 25-50%
  • Ownership mindset; commitment to safety and quality

Preferred — strong differentiators:

  • Exposure to estimating, cost analysis, or data analytics in construction or manufacturing
  • Familiarity with Python, SQL, or data modeling tools
  • Familiarity with CAD, Revit, or SolidWorks
  • Familiarity with AI productivity tools
