Ai Medical Coding information

How does an AI medical coding professional typically collaborate with healthcare providers and IT teams?

AI Medical Coding professionals often work closely with healthcare providers to ensure clinical documentation is accurately interpreted and coded. They also collaborate with IT teams to implement, validate, and optimize AI-driven coding tools, ensuring systems meet compliance standards and integrate smoothly with existing electronic health records (EHRs). Open communication with both groups is essential, as it helps address discrepancies, improve coding accuracy, and streamline workflows. This cross-functional collaboration is key to maintaining high-quality data and regulatory compliance in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

What is AI medical coding?

AI Medical Coding refers to the use of artificial intelligence technologies to automate the process of converting healthcare diagnoses, procedures, and services into standardized medical codes. These codes are essential for billing, insurance claims, and maintaining accurate patient records. AI systems can analyze clinical documents and recommend or assign appropriate codes with greater speed and accuracy, helping to reduce human error and administrative workload. This technology supports healthcare providers by streamlining coding processes and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

What is the difference between Ai Medical Coding vs Medical Coding?

AspectAi Medical CodingMedical Coding
CertificationsTypically requires CPC or CCS certificationsRequires CPC, CCS, or equivalent certifications
Work EnvironmentOften performed in healthcare facilities or remotely with AI supportPrimarily in hospitals, clinics, or remote settings
Industry UsageUsed in healthcare billing, insurance, and AI-driven coding toolsUsed in medical billing, coding departments, and healthcare administration

Ai Medical Coding combines artificial intelligence with medical coding skills, often requiring similar certifications as traditional Medical Coding. While Medical Coders manually review and assign codes, Ai Medical Coding leverages AI tools to automate or assist this process. Both roles are essential in healthcare billing and insurance, but Ai Medical Coding emphasizes technology integration, making it suitable for those interested in AI applications within healthcare.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AI medical coder?

To thrive as an AI Medical Coder, you need expertise in medical coding standards (ICD-10, CPT), healthcare regulations, and a strong understanding of medical terminology, often supported by a certification such as CPC or CCS. Familiarity with AI-driven coding platforms, EHR systems, and data analytics tools is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for ensuring coding accuracy and collaborating with healthcare teams. These competencies are essential for maintaining compliance, optimizing reimbursement, and supporting efficient healthcare operations in an increasingly technology-driven environment.

Job description

About Magical
Magical is an agentic automation platform revolutionizing healthcare with state-of-the-art AI-delivering production-ready AI agents that drive real results at scale.
We believe the future of healthcare lies not in replacing people, but in multiplying their best qualities. Magical empowers healthcare organizations to scale their top experts across every workflow, ensuring more accurate, efficient, and compassionate operations.
We're building "AI employees" to automate repetitive, time-consuming tasks while keeping humans in control. Our focus is healthcare, a $4 trillion industry mired in administrative complexity. By automating processes like prior authorizations and medical coding, we enable providers to concentrate on patient care.
Our Momentum
  • Customers rapidly expand from initial workflows to broader use cases after seeing reliable production results.
  • 7-day proof-of-concepts deliver real value quickly-an industry where months are typical.
  • Self-healing automations maintain production-grade reliability at scale.

Magical is backed by Greylock, Coatue, and Lightspeed, with $41M raised. Our founder, Harpaul Sambhi, previously sold his first company to LinkedIn.
About the Role
As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll shape the technical direction of Magical's AI agent systems. You'll drive product delivery, elevate engineering standards, mentor peers, and stay hands-on with the code.
Magical orchestrates complex, high-stakes healthcare workflows involving queues, run state, browser automation, model calls, system evaluations, observability, and human-in-the-loop recovery.
You'll transform messy customer inputs-SOPs, decision trees, portal behaviors, edge cases-into robust automations. This means building systems that draft workflows, test them, catch failures, suggest improvements, and trigger human intervention when necessary. You'll also focus on runtime reliability, workflow pathways, evaluations, and specialized agents for repeatable healthcare workflows.
This is a hybrid role based in our San Francisco office.
What You'll Do
  • Set the technical direction for core agent systems-automation building, runtime reliability, evaluations, and observability
  • Lead ambiguous backend and full-stack projects that materially advance the product
  • Improve engineering practices through better architecture, faster feedback loops, stronger code reviews, and clear standards
  • Mentor teammates through pairing sessions, code reviews, and by modeling strong engineering practices

You May Be a Fit If
  • You have 8+ years of software development experience.
  • You've led complex backend or platform projects with real production impact
  • You turn ambiguous product goals into clear, executable technical direction
  • You bring strong systems design instincts: distributed systems, databases, APIs, queues, asynchronous workflows, and observability
  • You have experience integrating AI tools into your workflow and experiment with unconventional solutions
  • You elevate engineers around you while staying close to the code
  • You possess high agency, strong ownership, and excel at prioritizing what matters

Even Better
  • Experience with platform, infrastructure, or workflow systems at scale
  • Experience building agentic products or agent-based workflows
  • Experience integrating LLMs or AI models into production backend systems
  • Background in event-driven architectures, workflow engines, observability, or runtime reliability
  • Prior experience in healthcare operations or revenue cycle management

We're building the best self-serve agentic automation platform for healthcare-and we're just getting started. Come join us!
