What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AI Math Instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AI Math Instructor, you need a deep understanding of mathematics, experience in teaching or curriculum development, and a background in computer science or AI, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, and educational platforms is highly valuable. Strong communication, patience, and the ability to simplify complex concepts are essential soft skills for engaging and supporting students. These skills ensure effective instruction, foster student learning, and keep the curriculum relevant to current AI advancements.

What are AI Math Instructors?

AI Math Instructors are educators who specialize in teaching mathematics using artificial intelligence tools and methodologies. They may design curriculum, develop interactive lessons, and leverage AI-powered platforms to personalize learning and assess student progress. These instructors can work in schools, online education companies, or technology firms, helping students at various levels understand math concepts with the aid of cutting-edge technology. Their role often includes staying updated on both math pedagogy and advances in AI to provide effective and engaging instruction.

How do AI Math Instructors typically collaborate with other educators and technologists to enhance student learning?

AI Math Instructors frequently work alongside curriculum designers, software engineers, and fellow instructors to develop engaging and effective math lessons using AI-based tools. Collaboration often involves regular meetings to review student progress data, share feedback on instructional strategies, and refine lesson plans or algorithms for adaptive learning platforms. This teamwork helps ensure that AI-driven content remains pedagogically sound while also being technologically robust, ultimately leading to better learning outcomes for students.

Job description

Since 1920, Mount St. Joseph University has provided an education grounded in interdisciplinary liberal arts and professional curricula emphasizing mission, values, integrity, and social responsibility. Faculty and staff deliver high-quality academics, hands-on experiential learning, and personalized attention to support student success. Join our award-winning team, recognized as a "Best College to Work For," and be part of a vibrant culture that places a premium on collaboration and belonging.
The School of Arts & Sciences at Mount St. Joseph University invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor or Instructor of Mathematics position, beginning August 2026. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to a student-centered program with strong ties to teacher preparation and a growing emphasis on applied and interdisciplinary learning.
Mount St. Joseph University is well known for its excellence in education programs, and this role will play an important part in supporting and mentoring future mathematics educators. The successful candidate will work closely with undergraduate math education majors and collaborate with faculty across disciplines.
Pedagogy is central to this position. We are especially interested in candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to effective, evidence-based teaching practices and who are passionate about helping students learn, persist, and succeed in mathematics. The ideal candidate will bring thoughtful approaches to instruction, including active learning, inclusive teaching strategies, and a focus on conceptual understanding.
In addition, the position will support the university's expanding computer science offerings, including providing instruction in statistics and calculus that supports the planned Artificial Intelligence (AI) major. This creates a unique opportunity to connect mathematics instruction with real-world applications in data, computing, and emerging technologies.
Candidates with experience or interest in applied tools such as Python, SQL, or data visualization platforms (e.g., Tableau or Power BI) are especially encouraged to apply. These skills will allow the candidate to contribute to a broader range of courses and support interdisciplinary teaching across mathematics, data, and computing.
Candidates with K-12 teaching experience who are interested in transitioning to higher education are strongly encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities include:
  • Teaching undergraduate courses in mathematics, including introductory, statistics, and calculus courses.
  • Designing and delivering high-quality instruction grounded in effective pedagogical practices.
  • Supporting and mentoring students pursuing math education pathways.
  • Assisting with departmental advising and mentoring undergraduate students.
  • Developing engaging, student-centered learning experiences that emphasize conceptual understanding and real-world application.
  • Collaborating with faculty in computer science and related areas to support interdisciplinary programs, including the AI major.
  • Contributing to courses or modules that integrate mathematics with data analysis, programming, or visualization where appropriate.
  • Participating in or contributing to grant writing and external funding efforts that support program development, student success, or interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Contributing to program development and continuous improvement, particularly in curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Providing service to the department, university, and professional community.
  • Engaging in scholarly or professional activities appropriate to rank and appointment.
  • Fulfilling other duties as assigned to support the mission of the School of Arts & Sciences and the university.

For Assistant Professor (tenure-track): Ph.D. in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely related field from an accredited institution; ABD applicants will be considered.
For Instructor (non-tenure track): Master's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely related field.
We welcome candidates with a strong commitment to teaching and student success. Experience teaching mathematics at the secondary level is valued, and candidates with K-12 teaching backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Preferred qualifications include:
  • Demonstrated strength in pedagogy, including experience with active learning, inclusive teaching, or curriculum development.
  • Experience teaching statistics, calculus, or quantitative reasoning courses.
  • Interest or experience in mathematics education and teacher preparation.
  • Familiarity with applied tools such as Python, SQL, or data visualization platforms (e.g., Tableau or Power BI).
  • Ability to connect mathematics to applied fields such as data science or artificial intelligence.
  • Interest or experience in grant writing or participation in externally funded projects.
  • Evidence of effective, student-centered teaching and mentorship.
  • Interest in scholarship related to mathematics education, pedagogy, or applied mathematics.

We seek candidates who embody our mission, are committed to inclusive and engaging teaching practices, and are excited to contribute to a collaborative and evolving program.
