Job Description

Atlas is seeking motivated AI Interns to support the development of innovative artificial intelligence tools that enhance how civil engineering and planning teams deliver projects. This role offers hands-on experience applying AI, automation, and data analysis to real-world transportation, infrastructure, and environmental challenges. Success in this role will be demonstrated through the delivery of functional prototypes, efficiency-improving tools, and thoughtful collaboration with technical teams across the company.

Core Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and development of AI-driven tools to improve engineering workflows, data analysis, and reporting

  • Develop scripts, models, or workflows that automate repetitive or data-intensive tasks

  • Support internal teams by translating business and engineering needs into technical AI solutions

  • Conduct research and testing on emerging AI technologies relevant to civil engineering and project delivery

  • Document development processes, assumptions, and user guidance for internal tools

  • Collaborate with engineers, planners, and IT staff to iteratively refine tools based on feedback

Youll thrive here if you have

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field. Will accept undergraduate candidates with relevant coursework or project experience in lieu of professional experience

  • Academic or practical experience with programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, or similar

  • Ability to think analytically and solve problems independently

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to manage tasks and meet deadlines in a part-time, fast-paced environment

  • Experience or coursework related to AI, machine learning, data analytics, or automation

  • Experience with or exposure to tools such as Python, Jupyter Notebooks, Git/GitHub, APIs, or low-code automation platforms

  • Preferred but not required: SQL, Power BI, Azure AI, OpenAI tools, or similar

  • Interest in applying technology solutions within the civil engineering, transportation, or infrastructure industry (prior industry experience not required)

  • Strong curiosity and willingness to learn new technologies

  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams

  • Professionalism and discretion when working with internal data and processes

  • Interest in innovation, efficiency, and technology-driven problem solving
