What is an AI Developer Advocate?

An AI Developer Advocate is a professional who bridges the gap between AI technology providers and the developer community. They help developers understand and effectively use AI tools, platforms, and frameworks by creating educational resources, offering technical support, and gathering feedback to improve products. AI Developer Advocates often speak at conferences, write tutorials, and engage with developers both online and in person. Their goal is to foster a vibrant, informed community and ensure that AI technologies are accessible and useful to developers of all skill levels.

How does an AI Developer Advocate balance technical work with community engagement responsibilities?

As an AI Developer Advocate, you'll often split your time between hands-on technical tasks—like building sample applications, writing tutorials, or testing new AI tools—and engaging with developer communities through events, online forums, and social media. This dual focus requires strong time management and adaptability, as you'll need to stay current with AI technologies while also translating complex concepts for diverse audiences. Collaboration with product, engineering, and marketing teams is common to ensure accurate messaging and gather feedback from users. This balance can be challenging but is rewarding for those passionate about both technology and community building.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AI Developer Advocate?

To thrive as an AI Developer Advocate, you need a solid background in computer science, AI/ML concepts, and programming languages like Python, often supported by a relevant degree or industry experience. Familiarity with popular AI frameworks (such as TensorFlow or PyTorch), cloud platforms, and strong technical writing skills are essential, along with experience using developer community tools like GitHub and Stack Overflow. Exceptional communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills help you effectively engage and educate diverse developer audiences. These abilities are crucial for building trust, fostering adoption, and bridging the gap between AI product teams and the broader developer community.

Job description

Developer Advocate
Department: Product Management
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Bethesda
Reporting To: Jason Kaveney
Compensation: $95,000 - $135,000 / year
Description
Brivo is looking for a technically sharp, process-minded Developer Advocate to own our API certification program. In this role, you'll be the bridge between Brivo's API platform and the tech partners who build on it, validating that their integrations meet our technical standards before they go live. You will work hands-on with partner code and test results, while also managing the certification pipeline end-to-end, coordinating with engineering, and improving the program itself over time.
This position is based at our headquarters in Bethesda, MD, and requires the ability to work on-site
Key Responsibilities
  • Be the go-to technical expert our partners and customers turn to when integrating with Brivo's API
  • Develop and maintain sample apps, AI skills, and API documentation that developers actually want to use
  • Own the API certification program end-to-end, from intake through sign-off, to ensure our customers have access to reliable, highly performant integrations
  • Partner directly with engineering to flag API gaps, identify enhancements, and surfaced through certification, giving you a real voice in the platform's roadmap.
  • Use AI-assisted development and agentic tools to speed up code review, testing, and documentation, building the workflow the way you'd want it, not the way it's always been done.
  • Perform hands-on validation of new API endpoints, admin portal tools, and developer dashboard capabilities prior to release.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
  • 2-4 years of experience in a developer-facing role such as developer relations, technical support engineering, solutions engineering, or software development.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent hands-on experience).
  • Demonstrated ability to use AI-assisted development tools, agentic workflows (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor), and AI-related integration standards (e.g., MCP)
  • Proficiency reading and writing code in at least one modern language (e.g., Python, JavaScript, Node.js, Java).
  • Solid understanding of REST APIs, webhooks, and authentication schemes (OAuth 2.0, API keys).
  • Experience with API testing tools (Postman, Insomnia) and debugging integration issues.
  • Familiarity with version control (Git) and issue tracking tools (Jira, Asana, or similar).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to varied audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple partner relationships and certification requests at the same time.
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally with engineering, product, and external partners.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong process and quality mindset.
  • Prior experience in API integration, certification, or partner onboarding programs is a plus.
  • Experience with API documentation tools (Swagger/OpenAPI, Redoc, Readme.io) is a plus.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines or automated testing frameworks is a plus.
  • Experience in physical security, IoT, or access control industries is a plus.
