Is AI taking over biology jobs?

AI biology jobs involve using artificial intelligence to analyze biological data, automate research, and develop new solutions. While AI tools enhance efficiency and enable new research methods, they complement rather than replace human biologists, who provide critical interpretation, experimental design, and ethical oversight.

What is an AI Biology job?

An AI Biology job involves using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computational models to analyze biological data and solve complex problems in life sciences. Professionals in this field work on tasks such as drug discovery, genomics, bioinformatics, and medical diagnostics by leveraging AI-powered tools. They collaborate with biologists, data scientists, and engineers to develop predictive models, automate research processes, and enhance our understanding of biological systems. This interdisciplinary role requires expertise in biology, programming, and data analysis to drive innovations in healthcare and biotechnology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Ai Biology position, and why are they important?

To excel in AI Biology, you need a strong background in computational biology, machine learning, and molecular biology, often demonstrated through an advanced degree in bioinformatics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or R, experience with genomic data analysis tools, and proficiency in handling large biological datasets are crucial, along with relevant certifications like Certified Bioinformatics Professional (CBP). Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you bridge the gap between biology and data science while working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams. These skills enable you to develop innovative AI-driven solutions and extract meaningful insights from complex biological data, driving scientific discovery and real-world applications.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities for someone working in AI Biology?

In an AI Biology role, you will typically spend your days developing algorithms to analyze biological data, collaborating with researchers to interpret results, and building predictive models to address biological questions. Your work may also include curating large datasets, writing and optimizing code, documenting your methods, and presenting findings to other scientists or stakeholders. It is common to operate in a cross-functional environment, working alongside professionals in biology, data science, and software engineering. This dynamic role requires both independent problem-solving and teamwork to drive innovation in biological research and healthcare applications.

What is a $900000 AI job?

A $900,000 AI job typically refers to a high-level position in artificial intelligence, such as AI research director, senior machine learning engineer, or AI executive, often requiring advanced skills, extensive experience, and sometimes a combination of technical expertise and leadership. These roles may involve developing innovative AI solutions, managing teams, or overseeing strategic projects in technology companies or research institutions.

What is the highest paid biology job?

In the field of biology, senior roles such as biotechnology executives, pharmaceutical research directors, and biomedical scientists tend to have the highest salaries, often exceeding six figures annually. These positions typically require advanced degrees, extensive experience, and leadership skills, with salaries influenced by industry, location, and company size.

What is the field of AI in biology?

AI in biology involves applying artificial intelligence techniques, such as machine learning and data analysis, to understand biological data and processes. AI biologists develop models to predict biological outcomes, analyze genomic data, and assist in drug discovery, often using tools like Python, R, and specialized bioinformatics software.

Job description

A healthier future. It's what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That's what makes us Roche.
Advances in AI, data, and computational sciences are transforming drug discovery and development. Roche's Research and Early Development organisations at Genentech (gRED) and Pharma (pRED) have demonstrated how these technologies accelerate R&D, leveraging data and novel computational models to drive impact. Seamless data sharing and access to models across gRED and pRED are essential to maximising these opportunities. The new Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CoE) is a strategic, unified group whose goal is to harness this transformative power of data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist our scientists in both pRED and gRED to deliver more innovative and transformative medicines for patients worldwide.
The Opportunity
The AI Biology & Translation (AIBT) department within Genentech's Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CS-CoE) is building the next generation of AI systems for biology. Our mission is to develop AI models that learn from biological data at unprecedented scale, generating new insights into disease mechanisms, therapeutic opportunities, and human biology.
We are seeking an exceptional scientist to lead a research program focused on Genomics AI and Biological Foundation Models. This role is ideal for a researcher with a strong track record in machine learning, sequence modeling, regulatory genomics, and representation learning who is excited about advancing the frontier of AI for biology.
As a Senior Principal Scientist, you will lead a team developing AI models that learn from genomic sequence, gene regulation, cellular state, perturbational biology, and multimodal biological data. You will help define Genentech's strategy for applying modern machine learning to biological discovery and establish new capabilities that accelerate therapeutic innovation across the R&D portfolio.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead Genomics AI Strategy: Define the scientific roadmap and strategy for genomics foundation models to accelerate therapeutic innovation across Genentech's portfolio.
  • Advance AI Methodology: Develop state-of-the-art sequence modeling, self-supervised learning, and generative models using multimodal biological data (genomics, chromatin state, cellular context).
  • Drive Biological Discovery: Partner with experimental groups to translate machine learning innovation into insights for target discovery and disease understanding.
  • Influence Organizational Direction: Serve as a scientific leader within AIBT to shape Genentech's long-term AI-for-biology strategy.
  • Publish & Present: Maintain scientific excellence by publishing in top-tier ML/genomics venues and representing Genentech at global conferences.
  • Evaluate Emerging Tech: Assess cutting-edge advancements in machine learning to identify new opportunities for transformative scientific impact.
  • Mentor Teams: Lead and mentor a team of scientists, fostering a culture of innovation, excellence, and collaboration.

Who you are
Required:
