How much do ai backend developer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for ai backend developer in the United States is $57.73, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $47.36 and $68.27 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does the role of an AI Backend Developer typically interact with data scientists and frontend teams?

As an AI Backend Developer, you will frequently collaborate with data scientists to integrate machine learning models into scalable backend systems. This involves translating prototypes into production-ready APIs, ensuring data pipelines are robust, and optimizing inference performance. You’ll also work closely with frontend teams to define API contracts and ensure that data flows smoothly between the user interface and backend processes. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as these collaborations help deliver seamless AI-powered features to end users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AI Backend Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AI Backend Developer, you need strong programming skills (especially in Python or Java), a solid grasp of machine learning concepts, and experience with backend frameworks, supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure), containerization tools (such as Docker), and frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch is typically required, along with knowledge of RESTful APIs and databases. Problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and clear communication are essential soft skills that help navigate complex projects and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These technical and interpersonal skills ensure robust, scalable AI solutions are developed and maintained efficiently in a rapidly evolving field.

What is the difference between Ai Backend Developer vs Data Engineer?

AspectAi Backend DeveloperData Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in CS, AI, or related fields; knowledge of AI frameworksBachelor's in CS, Data Science, or related fields; expertise in data pipelines
Work EnvironmentDeveloping AI models, integrating AI into backend systemsBuilding and maintaining data infrastructure and pipelines
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, AI startups, enterprises integrating AIData-driven companies, finance, healthcare, tech firms

While both roles require strong programming skills and familiarity with data processing, Ai Backend Developers focus on integrating AI models into backend systems, whereas Data Engineers specialize in building data pipelines and infrastructure. Both roles are essential in AI-driven projects but serve different functions within the data ecosystem.

What are AI Backend Developers?

AI Backend Developers are software engineers who specialize in building and maintaining the server-side infrastructure that powers artificial intelligence applications. They design APIs, manage databases, and implement algorithms that support machine learning models and AI-driven features. Their work ensures that AI systems are scalable, efficient, and securely integrated with other services. AI Backend Developers often work closely with data scientists and frontend developers to deliver end-to-end AI solutions.

Job description

Join Our Mission
Nexleaf Analytics safeguards public health in low- and middle-income countries. Our remote-temperature monitoring for vaccine cold-chain equipment is operational in over 25 countries, supporting vital health infrastructure where it's hardest to reach.
Now we're expanding that impact. Data on medical equipment is becoming widely available, but countries struggle to turn it into action. That's why we're building the Connected Clinic - using data to drive transparency, accountability, and better health outcomes, prioritizing local needs and sustainability over donor-driven models.
Your Role
As a Senior Software Engineer, AI & Backend, you'll design and scale the cloud platform that connects tens of thousands of IoT devices across the globe, many in remote, low-bandwidth environments - and turns their data into AI-driven decision tools used by Ministries of Health, global agencies, and partner NGOs.
This role is hands-on. You'll build, deploy, and optimize AI-powered systems - RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) pipelines, agentic workflows, intelligent data processing - and own them end-to-end, from architecture to production reliability to evaluating whether they actually deliver. You'll work closely with product managers, data scientists, and engineers, and report to the Engineering Director.
Your responsibilities:
  • Architect and ship AI-driven features - RAG pipelines and agentic workflows that take action across systems with human oversight where it matters.
  • Build the backend and infrastructure to run these reliably and at scale, across tens of thousands of IoT devices and low-connectivity environments.
  • Define what "good" looks like for our AI systems - holding them to real accuracy and impact standards, not demo performance.
  • Own large parts of the system end-to-end, from architecture to production reliability.
  • Work closely with product and data science to iterate fast and keep solutions aligned with product vision and real public-health needs.

Requirements:
  • Expert-level Python and backend engineering, with a track record of scalable production services.
  • Proven, in-production experience with RAG (retrieval, embeddings, vector stores).
  • Hands-on experience building agentic systems - multi-step, tool-using AI that takes action, not just chat.
  • Strong grasp of the infrastructure to run AI in production reliably at scale (cloud, AWS/GCP).
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating AI systems for accuracy and real-world impact, and iterating on results.

Remote / Time Zone
This is a fully remote role, with a preference for candidates based in the time zones from the U.S. Eastern through East Africa (UTC-5 to UTC+3), to align with our primary engineering and product team workflows. Some flexibility in working hours is needed to ensure collaboration across time zones.
Compensation
Salary is determined by location and local benchmarking. In the US, the range for this position is $125,000-$142,000, with adjustments based on experience and location.
Application
The application window for this position will close on July 7, 2026. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply before the deadline to ensure full consideration.
Please apply directly through our hiring portal. To ensure a fair and consistent review process, all applications are evaluated through the portal, and we're unable to consider resumes or inquiries sent directly to Nexleaf team members.
