An Agile Practice Lead is a professional responsible for guiding organizations in adopting and optimizing Agile methodologies, such as Scrum or Kanban, across teams and departments. They provide coaching, mentorship, and strategic direction to ensure Agile principles are understood and effectively implemented. Agile Practice Leads often work closely with leadership, product teams, and project managers to foster a culture of continuous improvement and collaborative problem-solving. Their goal is to help organizations deliver high-quality products efficiently and adapt quickly to changing business needs.

How does an Agile Practice Lead typically support teams in overcoming resistance to Agile adoption?

An Agile Practice Lead plays a crucial role in guiding teams through the transition to Agile methodologies by providing coaching, facilitating open communication, and addressing concerns about new workflows. They often work closely with team members and stakeholders to identify sources of resistance, tailor Agile practices to fit organizational culture, and demonstrate the value of iterative improvement. By fostering a collaborative environment and offering continuous education, the Agile Practice Lead helps teams build confidence in Agile processes and gradually embrace change.

The Agile Practice Lead typically oversees multiple teams and focuses on strategic Agile implementation across an organization, while a Scrum Master works closely with a single team to facilitate Scrum processes and remove obstacles. Both roles require Agile certifications and are vital in Agile environments, but their scope and responsibilities differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Agile Practice Lead, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Agile Practice Lead, you need deep expertise in Agile methodologies (such as Scrum or Kanban), experience in project delivery, and often a relevant degree or Agile certification (e.g., Certified ScrumMaster or SAFe). Familiarity with tools like Jira, Confluence, and other Agile project management software is typically required. Strong leadership, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills enable you to drive cultural change and foster high-performing teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring Agile adoption, continuous improvement, and successful project outcomes across the organization.

What jobs will be left by 2030?

An Agile Practice Lead is responsible for guiding and implementing Agile methodologies within an organization, ensuring teams follow best practices for Scrum, Kanban, or other frameworks. They often facilitate Agile training, coach teams, and work with stakeholders to improve project delivery and collaboration.

How much does an Agile coach get paid?

An Agile Practice Lead or Agile coach typically earns between $90,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles with certifications like Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or SAFe Program Consultant (SPC) can command higher salaries, especially in large organizations or tech hubs.

What is the 3 5 3 rule in Agile?

The 3-5-3 rule in Agile refers to a guideline for team communication and planning, suggesting that daily stand-up meetings should last around 3 minutes, sprint planning sessions about 5 hours for a two-week sprint, and retrospectives approximately 3 hours. As an Agile Practice Lead, understanding such rules helps optimize team collaboration and time management within Agile frameworks like Scrum or Kanban.

Job description

Stand Together is a philanthropic community that helps America's boldest changemakers tackle the root causes of our country's biggest problems, from education to the economy, broken communities, and toxic division, among dozens of other pressing issues. We provide our partners with access to resources including funding, thought leadership, a network of peers, and a playbook for applying proven principles to transform lives and society.

As Agile Practice Lead, you will help us build an Agile practice from the ground up. Over the last year, a structured contractor engagement has demonstrated that dedicated Agile leadership meaningfully improves delivery predictability, team throughput, and leadership visibility across multiple scrum teams. We are now ready to bring that capability in-house, and the Agile Practice Lead is the foundational step toward that end.

This is a senior-level leadership and enablement role. You will own the Agile practice as a discipline: setting the standards, developing the practitioners, and connecting day-to-day delivery execution to our broader operating model. You will build and lead a small team of Scrum Masters, serve as the primary strategic partner to engineering and product leadership on delivery health, and translate what is happening across teams into insights that help us make better decisions faster.

How You Will Contribute
  • Own the Agile practice: define standards, build playbooks, and ensure consistency of execution across teams.

  • Hire, develop, and manage a team of Scrum Masters; set craft expectations, support career growth, and maintain a high bar for the function.

  • Lead Agile maturity assessments across teams and translate findings into prioritized, actionable improvement plans.

  • Build and maintain a leadership-facing view of delivery health: normalized metrics, dashboards, and sprint insights that give leaders a reliable, consistent signal across the portfolio.

  • Serve as the primary internal point of contact for delivery model governance-connecting Agile execution to intake, prioritization, and cross-team dependency management.

  • Partner with Product and Engineering leaders to optimize and advance delivery team objectives.

  • Own Jira workflow standards, reporting integrity, and tooling consistency across delivery teams; ensure the data in the system is trustworthy and useful.

  • Identify opportunities to reduce administrative burden through automation, AI-assisted tooling, and process simplification.

  • Build a community of practice that elevates Agile craft across EIT and creates a shared language for delivery excellence.

What You Will Bring
  • Substantial experience in Agile delivery at a senior or lead level, with a track record of improving outcomes across multiple teams.

  • Demonstrated experience managing, mentoring, and developing Agile practitioners.

  • The ability to operate simultaneously at the strategic and practitioner level: you can set direction and model the behavior you expect.

  • Strong Jira expertise: automation, workflow design, backlog configuration, dashboard and reporting development.

  • Exceptional facilitation and communication skills, including the ability to translate delivery signals into executive-level insights without losing the nuance that makes them actionable.

  • Experience building practices in maturing organizations. You are comfortable with ambiguity and know how to create structure without creating rigidity.

  • Enthusiasm to contribute to Stand Together's vision and principled approach to solving problems, and a commitment to stewarding our culture, which champions values including transformation and innovation, entrepreneurialism, humility, and respect.
Standout Candidates Will Bring
  • Experience designing Agile maturity models, delivery scorecards, or similar frameworks for assessing and improving team performance.

  • Experience supporting platform, data, or enterprise technology teams, where delivery complexity is high and cross-team dependencies are the norm.

  • Experience building communities of practice or other mechanisms for scaling knowledge and standards across a distributed practitioner community.

  • Experience with AI-assisted tooling or automation approaches that reduce ceremony overhead and improve delivery visibility.

What We Offer
  • Competitive benefits: Enjoy a 6% 401(k) match with immediate vesting, flexible time off, comprehensive health and dental plans, plus wellness and mental health support through Peloton and Talkspace.
  • A meaningful career: Join a passionate community of over 1,300 employees dedicated to improving lives and driving innovative solutions to complex social challenges.
  • Commitment to growth: Thrive in a non-hierarchical environment that empowers employees to discover, develop and apply their unique talents.
  • Competitive compensation: Our approach rewards the value you create through competitive salaries and bonus opportunities, allowing you to share in the success you help drive.
Our Values: Working for an organization within the Stand Together philanthropic community is different from many other places. The culture is deeply rooted in Principle Based Management (PBM), a framework guided by the principles that drive human progress, such as dignity, openness, and bottom-up empowerment. PBM empowers employees to be entrepreneurial, to innovate, and to continually drive transformation.

We believe diversity fuels creativity, broadens knowledge, and helps drive success.  That is why we're proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer and strive to treat all employees and applicants with honesty, dignity, and respect.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
