What should I expect in my first job experience at age 15?

At age 15, many job opportunities are entry-level positions such as working at local retail stores, food service establishments, grocery stores, or babysitting. These roles often involve tasks like customer service, stocking shelves, cleaning, or assisting with light food preparation. Expect to work under the supervision of adults, follow safety and labor laws that limit your working hours, and gain valuable skills like teamwork, time management, and communication. Most employers offer training, so prior experience is not usually required, making these jobs a great starting point for building your resume and learning workplace expectations.

To thrive as a 15-year-old employee, you need a strong work ethic, reliability, and the ability to learn quickly, often complemented by a work permit if required by law. Familiarity with basic point-of-sale systems, computers, or customer service protocols is often helpful in entry-level roles. Communication skills, teamwork, and a positive attitude help young workers stand out and build good relationships with colleagues and customers. These abilities are crucial for gaining valuable job experience, building confidence, and setting a foundation for future employment success.

What jobs can you get at age 15?

At age 15, you can work in a variety of entry-level jobs such as babysitting, lawn care, retail, food service, or as a lifeguard, depending on your local labor laws. Many employers hire 15-year-olds for part-time or summer positions, but there are restrictions on hours and types of work. It's important to check your state's child labor laws for specific regulations and to obtain a work permit if required.
