Job description

Breastfeeding is a critical component of infant health, providing essential nutrition and strengthening the bond between mother and child.

As a Lactation RN, you play a vital role in:

  • Improving health outcomes for both mothers and babies by promoting successful breastfeeding practices.
  • Reducing hospital readmissions related to feeding issues and supporting early recovery.
  • Empowering families with knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about infant feeding.
  • Advancing community health by increasing awareness of lactation services and fostering a culture that supports breastfeeding.

Your expertise ensures that families receive compassionate, evidence-based care during one of the most important stages of life. In this role, you will provide expert breastfeeding support to mothers across Iowa Methodist, Methodist West, and Blank Children’s Hospital, as well as outpatient clients. Your guidance will help families establish and maintain successful breastfeeding practices.

  • Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care. 
  • Develops an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team. 
  • Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care. 
  • Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of care. 
  • Utilizes holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area. 
  • Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare team members within their scope of practice and holds them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care. 
  • Utilizes critical thinking in developing nursing interventions while maintaining responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients. 

Education:

  • Graduate of accredited nursing program 

License(s)/Certification(s):

  • Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa 

Experience:

  • 12 months of hospital clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency. 

Other: 

  • Level 3 Medium Work:  Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
