Head Start Afternoon Teacher
Reports to: Head Start: Prenatal to Three Director
Part Time/ Full Year
Torrington, CT
Salary Range: $16.94 - $17.50 per hour Commensurate with Experience
Position is open until filled / Anticipated start date is August 17, 2026
Job Description: EdAdvance is seeking a qualified applicant to work in conjunction with classroom staff to teach preschool children in the Head Start program in Torrington, CT. The qualified candidate will be professional, organized, experienced working with preschool aged children, and possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Major Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with classroom teaching staff to plan and implement a wide variety of creative and developmentally appropriate activities for children aged 3 to 5 that promote school readiness through language, literacy, cognition, social studies, mathematics, science, the arts, social-emotional skills and physical development in a culturally and linguistically rich environment.
  • Develop and maintain on-going relationships with parents as partners in their child's learning process.
  • Participate in and maintain documentation of staff professional development activities including staff meetings, workshops, conferences, and in-service training.
  • Adhere to the Closing Policy to insure the safe dismissal of all children, and the closing of the classroom.
  • Provide a safe physical and social/emotional environment for the children while maintaining active supervision at all times.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to develop effective relationships
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with children, families, and co-workers.

Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Associate's Degree (preferred) in Early Childhood or in a related field with 12 ECE credits and experience teaching preschool-aged children or CDA. Will accept experience working in a preschool classroom with a minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Maintain confidentiality about issues related to children and their families.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is considered an essential function of this job.
  • Bilingual Preferred: We welcome all qualified applicants and encourage candidates who are bilingual in Spanish and English to apply. While Spanish fluency is not required, it is highly valued given the large number of Spanish-speaking children and families we serve. The ability to communicate in Spanish has been especially helpful during end-of-day transitions when many staff members primarily speak English.
