Description
To coordinate efforts that align with Spokane Public School's mission of getting all students to standard. The School Community Specialist Substitute will be assigned by the Office of Community & Family Engagement as needed and will initiate, facilitate, and maintain programs and strategies that are aligned with the School Improvement Plan. The specialist, in collaboration with the SPS staff, will develop and further the best use of community/school resources to provide optimal impacts on both the academic and social emotional well-being of students. This will be done by enhancing community and individual assets, meeting critical social/emotional needs, and enhancing student academic performance, while supporting the needs of the classroom teacher. Assignments will be both before and after school hours.
  • RATE OF PAY: $29.06/HR
  • HOURS PER DAY: Varies
  • ON-CALL POSITION: No guarantee of hours/day or number of days/week. No benefits offered.
  • SECURITY CLEARANCE CHECK REQUIRED: A fingerprint background check is required for all prospective employees prior to start date. A processing fee is payable by payroll deduction
  • SALARY SCHEDULE:

Responsibilities
  1. Collaborate with classroom teachers/school staff to identify most at-risk students.
  2. Coordinate with attendance office at designated school to determine youth with patterns of absenteeism or tardiness.
  3. Intervene with strategies to reduce tardiness-example: collaborate with Attendance Board.
  4. Working with staff to make sure students are in support programs that meet their individual needs.
  5. Work with parents to support social/academic needs of students.
  6. Develop partnerships to promote student learning.
  7. Coordinate with University Service-Learning Organizations to schedule volunteers to designated areas within designated school.
  8. Recruit and manage volunteers for the school-based events such as: PTG, Muffins for Moms, Science and Technology night, Doughnuts for Dads, Author's Tea, Reading Night, Math Night, Open House, etc.
  9. Coordinate with PTO to engage new families within a welcome night on a monthly basis to identify community resources and support.
  10. Coordinate with community partners to offer Strengthening Families Program.
  11. Work with teachers to identify youth with "Friendship Group" needs, create and coordinate with counselor to put these groups into effect.
  12. Coordinate resources coming into school site and community, including primary health, mental health, arts, recreation, afterschool, and other resources.
  13. Maintain and update agreements for all partners and programs, including outcome measurements to monitor effectiveness of programs.
  14. Coordinating with community organizations to provide wrap-around services for students and accessing additional areas the students might need.
  15. Provide supervision and coordination of programing during and beyond the school day for students, families, and the community during extended daily hours and year long.
  16. Willingness to work before or after school hours, when necessary.

Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
  2. Bachelor's degree preferred in education, human services, or other related field of study; or minimum of three years' experience in a similar position.
  3. Understanding of and experience working with education, or human services systems.
  4. Experience working with in the public school system. Understanding and knowledge of what intervention services are accessible.
  5. Experience working with data to guide decision making for best intervention/support strategies.
  6. Experience working with community neighborhood organizations, community agencies, and volunteer programs. Requires excellent networking and training skills.
  7. Demonstrated ability in community outreach and organizing/planning, leadership training, and youth development desired. Knowledge of community dynamics and resources.
  8. Demonstrated ability to interact positively and in a professional manner with a diverse group of students, parents, staff, and community members in a confidential manner.
  9. Experience in program development, implementation, and/or evaluation.
  10. Ability to relate positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, different learning styles, and special needs.
  11. Demonstrated knowledge of culturally responsive programs and activities.
  12. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and clearly in both written and oral form.
  13. Experience with computers and software such as Windows, Microsoft Office, and/or publishing software.

Employees can choose from a lifetime retirement pension plan or a hybrid pension and investment plan that contributes between 5% and 15% of wages to retirement. When employees meet plan requirements and retire, they are guaranteed a monthly benefit for the rest of their life from the employer-funded pension.
      • Employees can also participate in voluntary savings programs to increase retirement savings such as the DRS Deferred Compensation Program or by participating in a 403(b) retirement plan through the District's plan manager, OMNI.
