Job description

Waverly seeks a part-time After School Program Coordinator and Counselor to join our community. The Coordinator is responsible for the implementation of a quality program that enriches the students academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. Under guidance of the Head of Elementary School, the After School Program Coordinator is responsible for helping to maintain a safe, clean site, ensuring quality programming, and supervising other After School Program Counselors. With Counselors, the Coordinator will build relationships with the students as role models and mentors in order to support them in their intellectual, emotional, moral and physical growth. The Coordinator will also work with the school to manage after school enrichment class opportunities as part of the overall After School Program at Waverly.

Work collaboratively with the After School Program team to promote lifelong learning, curiosity, and inquiry among students in engaging and creative ways.

Bring enthusiasm for working with children in a school setting; participate wholeheartedly in the life of the school; and conduct themselves professionally and warmly.

Communicate clearly with colleagues, families, and students as needed.

Demonstrate curiosity, creativity, self-reflection, and willingness to take initiative and run with new ideas

Show passion for working with students.

Desire to continue to learn and develop as an educator.

Essential Duties:

Plan and lead engaging After School Program activities, including creative arts, games, homework assistance, and outdoor play.

Develop and implement a daily schedule that includes a balance of structured and unstructured activities.

Coordinate with faculty and administrators to advertise, organize, and manage sign-ups for after school enrichment classes.

Ensure all activities are age-appropriate and align with the school's values and educational goals.

Supervise students at all times to ensure a safe and positive environment.

Cultivate a safe, joyful, and inclusive after school community by following common school principles of classroom management, co-creating expectations, and modeling intentional, supportive communication.

Collaborate with the School Nurse to provide first aid and general health support to students experiencing injury or sickness and notifying the parent/guardian by phone, email, or in-person as needed.

Coordinate with elementary school teachers at pick-up and facilitate the transfer of students from classrooms to the afterschool program areas.

Coordinate with afterschool enrichment class teachers in transfer from enrichment class to the afterschool program.

Thorough understanding of camp processes and procedures as provided by the school administrative team.

Maintain open and effective communication with students, parents, and school staff.

Create and maintain After School Program databases including program sign ups and attendance records.

Collaborate with the Waverly Business Office to ensure families are billed appropriately.

In collaboration with counselors, record attendance in the After School Program and log drop-ins and late pickups accurately to support appropriate supervision and accurate billing.

Provide regular feedback to parents about their child's day-to-day experience.

Seek guidance from the Head of Elementary School when appropriate regarding student behavior.

Collaborate with school administrators to continually improve the program.

Demonstrate punctuality, maintain regular attendance, and exhibit reliability in their presence during scheduled shifts

Other duties as may be assigned by the Head of School.

Ability to manage a group of children effectively and with compassion.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Creativity in planning and implementing activities.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

While not required, the ability to communicate effectively in Spanish, Chinese, Armenian, French, Hindi, Urdu and/or Korean will be particularly useful in this diverse region of California.

Education and Experience

Bachelor of Arts degree or equivalent experience

3-4 years of experience in a school setting working with children

Physical Demands:

Prolonged periods of standing and walking throughout classrooms, elementary school playground, multiple campus locations, and the school farm

Occasionally lift 15-45 pounds at a time

Regularly move up and down stairs

Regularly sit and stand on the floor throughout the day, and bend, kneel, or squat to be at eye level with children

Work in person, on campus

Other requirements

Initial and continued employment background investigation required โ€“ fingerprints via Live Scan

Initial and continued TB Assessment required for employment in CA schools

Completes required training each year including but not limited to Pediatric CPR/First Aid/AED, CA mandated reporter training, and as required by state licensing

Hours: Monday - Friday: 2:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Job Type: Part-time Pay: $22.00 - $25.00 per hour, depending on experience

Expected hours: 20 per week
