Job description

The Caroline School is seeking an on-call substitute teacher to join our team. Our school provides unique educational services to meet the physical, social and cognitive needs of individuals ages 5-21 with multiple disabilities, including those who have additional medical needs. With an average class size of eight learners and a staff to student ratio of 1:4, teachers are able to meet every student at their level.
Location: The Caroline School is located at 4888 Loop Central Drive, Houston, TX 77081
Position summary:
Provide as-needed instruction to individual and/or small groups of students with special and diverse cognitive, physical and behavioral needs. Create a positive learning environment allowing for students' physical, social and cognitive development.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Maintaining classroom equipment, work area, student files/records (e.g. adapting instructional
    materials, cleaning work area, taking attendance, etc.)
  • Providing reliable information to and from the assigned teacher needing coverage.
  • Monitoring and charting progress for appropriate curriculum as provided by assigned teacher.
  • Instructing, leading, and collaborating with any assigned teaching assistant(s) in classroom
    responsibilities.
  • Assisting students with daily living skills and medically necessary accommodations (i.e. tube
    feeding, tube venting, suctioning, toileting/diaper needs and feeding).
  • Refraining from engaging in discriminatory practices based on the student's disability, race, sex,
    cultural background or religion.
  • Following all confidentiality rules, forms and compliance issues.
  • Actively participating in any required trainings as specified by TCS Director.
  • Maintaining the agreed upon hours of classroom coverage (not to be before 8:00am or after 5pm,
    Monday-Friday)
  • Maintaining professional attitude.
  • Abiding by all The Caroline School and Easter Seals Greater Houston policies as outlined in the employee handbook.
  • Using assistive technology appropriately for each individual student based on their needs.
  • Working collaboratively with parents, other teachers, therapists, and support staff.
