How much do aerospace test engineer jobs pay per hour?
What are the typical daily responsibilities of an Aerospace Test Engineer?
On a typical day, an Aerospace Test Engineer designs and executes tests on aerospace components or systems, collects and analyzes performance data, and prepares detailed technical reports. They collaborate closely with design, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams to ensure products meet stringent safety and performance standards. Test Engineers may also troubleshoot unexpected results, refine test procedures, and participate in cross-functional meetings to discuss findings and recommend improvements. The role requires balancing hands-on work with documentation and communication to ensure successful project outcomes.
What is an Aerospace Test Engineer job?
An Aerospace Test Engineer is responsible for designing, conducting, and analyzing tests on aircraft, spacecraft, and related components to ensure safety, performance, and compliance with industry standards. They develop test procedures, operate specialized testing equipment, and interpret data to identify potential issues. This role involves collaboration with design and manufacturing teams to improve product reliability and efficiency. Aerospace Test Engineers work in laboratories, wind tunnels, or flight test environments and may specialize in areas such as structural testing, propulsion systems, or avionics. Their work is crucial for verifying that aerospace systems meet rigorous regulatory and safety requirements before deployment.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Aerospace Test Engineer position, and why are they important?
Aerospace Test Engineers require a strong background in aerospace engineering, physics, or related disciplines, with expertise in test planning, data analysis, and troubleshooting. Familiarity with industry-standard testing equipment, data acquisition systems, simulation software, and certifications such as AS9100 or Six Sigma are often expected. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills set outstanding candidates apart. These abilities ensure accurate and safe testing procedures, effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and reliable validation of aerospace components and systems.

Job description
The Test Facilities Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering (TFOME) contract at the NASA Glenn Research Center, Neil A. Armstrong Test Facility, in Sandusky, Ohio is searching for a Mechanical Test Engineer to provide engineering support and leadership in the planning, design, and technical execution of mechanical engineering and technical tasks for an assigned test or facility project at the NEAT Test Facility.
- Provide technical expertise to the users of the ground test facilities in planning test projects to ensure proper match of facility requirements with capabilities, balance of resources, and integration of schedules.
- Provide overall project management for an assigned test project including developing detailed project plans and project schedules with task lists, durations and assignment of resources. When given the assignment as the lead project engineer, the engineer has the responsibility for the overall execution of the project plan.
- Support large-and-small scale aerospace ground testing projects, including design of mechanical systems and/or test hardware, oversight of mechanical hardware fabrication, oversight of system and hardware installation, data analysis, instrumentation specifications, and final report generation. Test projects cover a wide variety of test types in many facilities including wind tunnels, air-breathing engine and engine component facilities, acoustic chambers, space propulsion (chemical and electrical) and space environment chambers (including cryogenic applications).
- Provide technical expertise and guidance in overall planning and execution of test projects in assigned facilities, as well as, planning, coordination and support of maintenance activities. This will include daily coordination with the test team, generation of work instructions to the technical staff (via task orders or other approved means), and general reporting to contractor and customer management.
- Analyze mechanical system requirements to match system capabilities with test requirements.
- Coordinate with electrical test engineering and data and instrumentation technicians to prepare facility to meet test and operational requirements.
- Prepare documentation supporting facility development efforts.
- Prepare specifications and purchase requisitions for facility hardware.
- Provide support for training of other engineers and technicians.
- Develop presentations and present at design reviews, safety reviews, and other technical presentations.
- Provide periodic status reports on each assigned task to contractor and customer management.
- Conduct design of experiments and experimental error analyses.
- Responsible for the calibration of test facilities (i.e. wind tunnel set point calibration and flow quality studies).
- Requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (e.g. Mechanical, Aerospace, etc.) or equivalent and two (2) years' applicable experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of aerospace testing and facility operations, mechanical test systems involving hydraulics, high vacuum, pneumatics, fluid mechanics, fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, and mechanical design.
- Understanding of electronic test systems involving data acquisition, sensors, and signal conditioning.
