How much do aerospace engineering professor jobs pay per year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Aerospace Engineering Professor position, and why are they important?
To thrive as an Aerospace Engineering Professor, you need an advanced degree (typically a Ph.D.) in aerospace engineering or a closely related field, combined with substantial research and teaching experience. Familiarity with simulation software (such as ANSYS or MATLAB), hands-on laboratory equipment, and a strong record of published research are highly valued. Excellent communication, mentoring abilities, and the capacity to inspire and guide students are key soft skills. These qualifications ensure high-quality education, foster groundbreaking research, and nurture the next generation of aerospace engineers.
What are the typical responsibilities of an Aerospace Engineering Professor throughout the academic year?
Aerospace Engineering Professors typically balance teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, conducting advanced research, supervising student projects, and publishing scholarly work throughout the year. They may also participate in curriculum development, collaborate with industry partners, and contribute to departmental committees. Much of the role involves mentoring students and advising on research or career paths, as well as seeking research grants to support ongoing projects. This multifaceted work environment allows professors to shape the future of the aerospace industry while advancing their own academic careers.
What does an Aerospace Engineering Professor do?
An Aerospace Engineering Professor teaches courses on aerodynamics, propulsion, spacecraft design, and related topics while conducting research in the field. They develop curricula, mentor students, and publish academic papers. Many also collaborate with industry or government agencies on aerospace innovations. Their work advances knowledge in aviation and space exploration while preparing the next generation of engineers.

Job description
The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at The University of Texas at Austin invites applicants for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The field of aerospace engineering is undergoing a revolutionary transformation with the commercialization and utilization of space, and growth in advanced air mobility and sustainable aviation. We seek candidates that hold promise for leading this transformation. An emphasis will be placed on applicants that have a clear vision about how they will contribute to emerging areas of aerospace engineering.
The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics is committed to supporting the success of all members of our community: students, staff, and faculty. A successful candidate can expect to benefit from and contribute to these efforts.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a PhD in engineering or a related discipline. The successful candidate will be expected to create undergraduate and graduate learning environments that address the needs of students from a variety of backgrounds, with differing learning styles and abilities. Further, the successful applicant will be expected to develop an externally sponsored research program, mentor graduate students, collaborate with other faculty, and be involved in service to the university and profession.
Application Instructions
Interested applicants should submit the following materials:
(1) a cover letter, (2) current curriculum vitae, (3) research statement, (4) teaching and mentoring statement, and (5)threeprofessional reference letters. Please see https://ae.utexas.edu/people/faculty/faculty-openings for additional information and guidance.
Candidates should address their submission to the Aerospace Engineering Faculty Search Committee. Evaluation of applications will begin on November 1, 2025, and will continue until an appropriate candidate is identified.
The successful candidate will be required to complete an Employment Eligibility Verification form and provide documents to verify identity and eligibility to work in the USA. A security sensitive background check will be conducted on the applicant selected.
Please address questions to Prof. Noel Clemens, the Faculty Search Committee Chair (clemens@mail.utexas.edu)
