How much do aerodynamics jobs pay per year?
What does an aerodynamics job involve?
An aerodynamics job focuses on analyzing and optimizing the performance of vehicles, primarily in aerospace and automotive industries, by studying airflow behavior. Professionals in this field use computational simulations, wind tunnel testing, and mathematical models to reduce drag, improve stability, and enhance fuel efficiency. Typical roles include aerodynamic engineers, CFD analysts, and wind tunnel test engineers. These specialists work closely with design and engineering teams to ensure optimal aerodynamic performance in real-world applications.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in aerodynamics?
To thrive in Aerodynamics, you need a strong background in fluid dynamics, physics, and mathematics, typically supported by an engineering degree or related qualification. Proficiency with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, wind tunnel testing tools, and simulation platforms is vital. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills are essential for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and presenting findings. These skills and qualities are important to ensure innovative and efficient aerodynamic designs that meet safety, performance, and regulatory standards.
What does a typical day look like for someone working in aerodynamics?
A typical day in Aerodynamics often involves running simulations using CFD software, analyzing test data from wind tunnels or prototypes, and collaborating with engineers from other disciplines such as mechanical or structural engineering. Professionals frequently participate in team meetings to discuss project progress, troubleshoot design challenges, and refine concepts based on experimental results. You may also be responsible for documenting your analysis and presenting findings to stakeholders or clients. The work environment is typically a mix of office-based technical modeling and hands-on testing, offering a dynamic and engaging routine.

Job description
Who We Are
Williams International is a privately-owned company that develops and manufactures jet engines for both military and commercial aircraft applications. We are a company of creators who deliver pioneering ideas and technologies that lead the aerospace industry. Our culture fosters creativity, collaboration, and continuous learning to position our team members to inspire each other and provide quality products and supporting services that exceed the expectations of our customers.
The Opportunity
Williams International is actively searching for an Aerodynamics Engineer who wants to apply their turbomachinery aerodynamics expertise in a cross-functional manner that extends beyond computation. This role is in a collaborative environment incorporating all aspects of development and production to support our existing engines and growing product line. Responsibilities include delivering aerodynamic designs and analyses of various turbomachinery flow path components, working with our expert in-house manufacturing team to ensure a producible design, and supporting engine and subsystem testing to provide design validation. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a broad spectrum of cutting-edge commercial and military gas turbine hardware with a high degree of ownership for aerodynamic performance throughout the product life cycle.
This position is 100% on-site.
Additionally, the Lead Engineer I - Aerodynamics will:
- Plan, support, and document tests including component and stage rigs to map performance and surge/stall characteristics, as well as engine systems-level tests
- Deliver timely aerodynamic dispositions to production support requests on discrepant hardware and cost reduction initiatives
- Train, mentor, and develop earlier-career aerodynamics engineers
- Develop analytical tools and methods to drive accuracy, innovation, and efficiency while meeting cost and schedule commitments
- Communicate analysis results and recommendations to internal and external customers, in both verbal presentation and written report formats
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Engineering required. Master's Degree preferred, but not required
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience in aerodynamic design and analysis
- Demonstrated understanding of turbomachinery aerodynamics including compressible flow and heat transfer, as well as familiarity with manufacturing methods and real-world design limitations
- Proficient in computational fluid dynamics and associated geometry generation and meshing tools, for example, methods similar to the following commercially available software modules: Fluent, CFX, Fine/Turbo, AXCENT, Pointwise
- Experience with optimization methods similar to those available in commercial optimization software such as iSight, HEEDS, or modeFrontier
- Experience in all phases of the product life cycle: conceptual design, detail design and optimization, testing, and production support
- Ability to effectively communicate analysis results, conclusions, and recommendations with a strong focus on documentation and corporate knowledge retention
- The candidate must be able to work independently and execute multiple projects simultaneously
- U.S. Citizenship status required
- Position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Government Security Clearance, if needed. Candidates selected may be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. For more information on Security Clearances, please visit: U.S. Department of State.
