What does an advertising agency proofreader do?

An Advertising Agency Proofreader is responsible for reviewing and correcting written content before it is published or delivered to clients. They check for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and consistency errors, ensuring that all advertising materials meet the agency's quality standards. Proofreaders work closely with copywriters, designers, and account managers to make sure the final product is error-free and communicates the intended message clearly. Their attention to detail helps maintain the agency's reputation and ensures that clients receive polished, professional work.

What are some common challenges an advertising agency proofreader faces when working on fast-paced campaigns?

Advertising Agency Proofreaders often work under tight deadlines, especially when clients request last-minute changes to campaign materials. Balancing speed and accuracy is a key challenge, as even small errors can affect brand reputation or campaign effectiveness. Additionally, proofreaders must adapt to varying styles and tones for different clients, often collaborating closely with copywriters, designers, and account managers to ensure all content is error-free and consistent across platforms. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a dynamic team environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advertising agency proofreader, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Advertising Agency Proofreader, you need strong grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills along with a keen eye for detail, typically supported by a degree in English, Communications, or a related field. Familiarity with proofreading marks, style guides (such as AP or Chicago), and digital editing tools like Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word is essential. Outstanding time management, communication, and collaboration skills help you meet tight deadlines and coordinate with creative teams. These abilities ensure error-free, consistent, and client-ready advertising materials, which are critical for maintaining agency reputation and delivering effective campaigns.

Job description

Join our award-winning A-Team!

Ready to produce exceptional results with exceptional people?  Get in touch, we would love to get to know you.

Affinitiv is the largest provider of end-to-end, data-driven marketing and software solutions exclusively focused on the automotive customer lifecycle. Backed by 20+ years of automotive and marketing expertise, we pride ourselves on being the go-to experts in the industry. Not only do we work with over 6,500 dealerships and every major manufacturer in the country, we're well-versed in OEM standards and the intricacies of a dealership or group's local business.

As a Copywriter, you'll back up the copy team on everything — TV, radio, print, digital, outdoor, direct mail — and jump in to support the Agency whenever a campaign needs an extra hand. We need someone who thinks outside the box, turns around creative content fast, and still hits every client and manufacturer guideline along the way. Retail advertising has its own rhythm, and getting fluent in it is part of the job from day one. You'll be collaborating constantly and working tight deadlines daily — so bring your A-game and your team spirit.

**A note before you apply:** We read writing samples before we read resumes. Please include a link to your portfolio or writing samples — applications without one won't be considered.

Position Responsibilities:

- Write automotive campaign concepts, TV and radio scripts, email blasts, P-Max copy, press releases, landing page copy and social ads — across a huge range of tones and formats
- Pitch creative concepts and campaign ideas, not just execute someone else's
- Take a creative brief and turn it into copy that fits the client's voice, not a generic template
- Work closely with the copy, art, account, and production teams to get a job from concept to finished execution
- Partner with Traffic to keep projects on schedule
- Show up for staff meetings, brainstorms, and the department's day-to-day — this is a team sport

Position Requirements:

- 3–5 years of copywriting experience in marketing or advertising
- Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, or a related field
- A portfolio that shows range — you can write funny, you can write urgent, you can write "brand-compliant," and you know the difference
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects under tight, recurring deadlines
- A thick-enough skin to take feedback well and use it
- Comfort with Mac OS and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- **Spanish language proficiency is a strong plus** — we serve a large and growing Spanish-speaking customer base, and bilingual copy and proofing skills are increasingly part of this role
