Advanced Thermoplastic Composites information

What are advanced thermoplastic composites?

Advanced thermoplastic composites are materials made by combining high-performance thermoplastic polymers with reinforcing fibers such as carbon, glass, or aramid. These composites offer superior strength, toughness, and resistance to heat and chemicals compared to traditional materials. They are lightweight, can be molded into complex shapes, and are often used in aerospace, automotive, and sporting goods due to their excellent mechanical properties and recyclability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advanced thermoplastic composites engineer?

To excel as an Advanced Thermoplastic Composites Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, polymer chemistry, and mechanical engineering, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Expertise in CAD software, composite manufacturing techniques (like automated fiber placement), and industry certifications such as Six Sigma are highly valued. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and project management skills set top performers apart in this field. These competencies enable engineers to develop innovative, high-performance composite solutions while ensuring efficiency, safety, and product quality.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working with advanced thermoplastic composites, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Professionals working with advanced thermoplastic composites often encounter challenges such as optimizing processing parameters, ensuring consistent material quality, and integrating new composite technologies into existing manufacturing lines. Addressing these requires staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in material science, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams (such as design, quality, and production), and participating in ongoing training. Team members often work together to troubleshoot issues and implement process improvements, making strong communication and problem-solving skills essential in this role.

What is the difference between Advanced Thermoplastic Composites vs Composite Manufacturing Technician?

AspectAdvanced Thermoplastic CompositesComposite Manufacturing Technician
CredentialsEngineering degrees, certifications in compositesTechnical diplomas, certifications in composite fabrication
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, aerospace, automotive industriesManufacturing plants, workshops
Industry UsageDesign, development, and testing of thermoplastic compositesFabrication, assembly, and quality control of composite parts

Advanced Thermoplastic Composites professionals focus on designing and developing thermoplastic composite materials, often in research or engineering roles. In contrast, Composite Manufacturing Technicians handle the hands-on fabrication and assembly of composite parts in manufacturing settings. While both roles work with composites, their focus, skills, and work environments differ significantly.

About Re:Build Manufacturing & Oribi
At Re:Build, our mission is to ensure the next generation of important products are made, at scale, in America. We are laying the foundation for a better future for our customers, employees, and communities by revitalizing America's manufacturing base and creating meaningful jobs across the country, including in historically deindustrialized regions.
We operate an advanced, end-to-end manufacturing platform that partners with industrial companies and innovators to take products from first concept to full-scale production in critical verticals including aerospace and defense, electrification, medical, energy and environment, and robotics and automation.
The way we operate is as important as the work we do. It's guided by The Re:Build Way, 16 principles that shape how we collaborate with each other, partner with our customers and vendors, and contribute to the communities where we operate. (link to The Re:Build Way principles)
Oribi Manufacturing, located in Denver, CO, is a leader in the development and production of advanced thermoplastic composites. We utilize automation, robotics, and advanced materials to produce advanced composite parts for a wide range of industries, including sporting goods, defense, wind energy, automotive, marine, and others.

  • Interact daily with FedEx UPS, USPS, DHL, and local vendors and carriers.
  • Operate warehouse equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, dock plates, etc.
  • Assist in loading and unloading of inbound and outbound shipments.
  • Input and extract data from computer systems.
  • Maintain inventory and assist with routine inventory counts.
  • Coordinate with the Customer Service Agent to schedule pick-ups and provide tracking information to the shipper and consignee, accordingly.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
