What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Advanced Process Control, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Advanced Process Control (APC) often encounter challenges such as integrating new control strategies with legacy systems, managing large volumes of process data, and ensuring that control solutions remain robust in the face of process variability. Addressing these challenges typically involves close collaboration with operations and IT teams, ongoing training in both process engineering and automation technologies, and a proactive approach to troubleshooting and optimization. Staying current with industry best practices and leveraging simulation tools can also help APC engineers deliver effective and reliable control solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Advanced Process Control (APC) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Advanced Process Control Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or process engineering, strong analytical skills, and experience with control theory, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and APC software like Aspen DMCplus or Honeywell Profit Controller is commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively with operations and technical teams. These skills are crucial for optimizing plant performance, ensuring process safety, and delivering cost and efficiency improvements.

What is the difference between Advanced Process Control vs Process Engineer?

AspectAdvanced Process ControlProcess Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, specialized training in control systemsEngineering degree, often in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, manufacturing facilities, process industriesDesign, optimize, and improve manufacturing processes across industries
Employer & IndustryProcess industries like oil & gas, chemicals, pharmaceuticalsManufacturing, process industries, consulting firms

Advanced Process Control specialists focus on implementing control algorithms to optimize industrial processes, while Process Engineers design and improve overall manufacturing systems. Both roles require engineering backgrounds, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ significantly.

What is Advanced Process Control (APC)?

Advanced Process Control (APC) refers to a collection of techniques and technologies used to optimize the performance of industrial processes beyond what is possible with basic process control methods. APC systems use complex algorithms, such as model predictive control and multivariable control, to improve process efficiency, product quality, and safety. They are commonly used in industries like oil and gas, chemicals, and manufacturing to reduce variability, increase throughput, and minimize energy consumption. Implementing APC can lead to significant economic benefits for companies by enabling more precise and consistent control of processes.

Scope of Responsibility:

The Quality Engineer position drives the overall success of Sabre Industries, Inc. by ensuring a superior level of conformance to customer specifications and industry standards across our specialized product lines, including telecommunication shelters, Energy Storage Systems (ESS), and modular Data Center PODs and Skids. This is achieved through the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of cutting-edge quality assurance and control systems and processes.

Essential Duties:

Establish and Implement Quality Standards: Define and maintain robust quality and reliability standards specifically tailored for telecom infrastructure, ESS enclosures, and Data Center modular solutions, utilizing appropriate measuring, testing, auditing techniques, and data collection methods.

Supervision of QC Inspectors: Provide technical direction, training, and supervision to Quality Control (QC) Inspectors to ensure the consistent and accurate execution of inspection plans, critical checks, and adherence to acceptance criteria throughout the manufacturing process.

Drive Conformance and Process Control: Achieve a high level of conformance to complex customer and regulatory specifications through the development and implementation of advanced quality control processes, including Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), control plans, detailed work instructions/standard work, systematic problem-solving (e.g., 8D), corrective action (CAPA), and rigorous process and product audits.

Technical Review and Compliance: Critically review complex Engineering Drawings, Bills of Material (BOMs), and specifications for completeness, correctness, and strict compliance with applicable industry codes (e.g., electrical, structural, fire safety) relevant to telecom, energy, and data center applications.

Continuous Improvement: Utilize comprehensive quality performance data-such as First Pass Yield (FPY), cost of quality (COQ), and warranty data-to proactively initiate and drive quality and process improvement projects across manufacturing and supply chains.

Stakeholder Communication: Clearly communicate critical quality control information, specifications, and performance metrics to all relevant internal departments, outside vendors supplying specialized components (e.g., HVAC, electrical gear), or contractors.

Training and Mentorship: Teach, coach, and train manufacturing and field service employees to understand and consistently achieve a high level of workmanship and technical compliance for specialized products.

System Ownership and Collaboration: Be actively involved in all elements of the Quality Management System (QMS), and collaborate effectively with customers, suppliers, and internal departments (Engineering, Production, Supply Chain) to meet stringent quality objectives and swiftly resolve complex technical problems affecting production and quality

Position Requirements:

Education: 4-year college degree in a technical discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering preferred). Or Equivalent Work Experience

Certifications: Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or Six Sigma Black Belt Certification preferred.

Quality System Expertise: Fundamental level of experience and demonstrable success in implementing and maintaining ISO 9001 and/or other relevant quality standards (e.g., AS9100, TL 9000).

Core Quality Tools: Extensive experience with developing and applying core quality planning tools, including FMEA, control plans, and robust technical procedures.

Technical Background: Proven experience in quality assurance with a strong electrical, mechanical, or structural background, ideally in a related field such as prefabricated structures, industrial machinery, power generation, or highly integrated electrical systems.

Attention to Detail: Exceptional detail-orientation and the ability to accurately read and interpret complex technical drawings, customer specifications, and industry codes.

Computer Skills: Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to produce professional reports, statistical analysis, and documentation.

Communication & Statistical Acumen: Must possess the ability to clearly communicate complex technical knowledge, ideas, and concepts, along with an excellent understanding of basic statistical process control (SPC) tools and methods.

Physical Requirements:

Work Environment: Demonstrated ability to manage frequent interruptions in workflow and constantly changing priorities.

Travel: Ability to travel approximately 10% of the time for supplier audits and quality assurance activities.
