What are some common challenges advanced practice providers (APPs) face when integrating into multidisciplinary healthcare teams?

Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) often work alongside physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in multidisciplinary teams. One common challenge is establishing clear communication and role boundaries, as responsibilities can sometimes overlap with those of physicians or other providers. APPs may also encounter varying levels of autonomy depending on the setting and state regulations. Strong clinical judgment, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams are vital soft skills. What is an advanced practice provider (APP)?

An Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a healthcare professional who has completed advanced education and clinical training beyond that of a registered nurse. APPs typically include nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), clinical nurse specialists, and certified nurse midwives. They are qualified to diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s primary healthcare provider. APPs work collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare team members to provide high-quality patient care. Their role is essential in improving access to healthcare services, especially in underserved areas.
