CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering, often with certifications in manufacturing or process improvementBachelor's degree in engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentDesigning and optimizing advanced manufacturing processes, often involving automation and new technologiesOverseeing daily production, process improvements, and equipment maintenance
Industry UsageUsed in high-tech, aerospace, automotive, and industries focusing on innovationCommon across various manufacturing sectors for general production roles

The Advanced Manufacturing Engineer focuses on developing and implementing cutting-edge manufacturing processes, often involving automation and new technologies. In contrast, the Manufacturing Engineer typically manages existing production lines and process improvements. Both roles require engineering backgrounds, but the advanced role emphasizes innovation and technology integration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advanced manufacturing engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Advanced Manufacturing Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, process optimization, and experience with manufacturing systems, often supported by a degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, automation technologies, lean manufacturing methodologies, and relevant certifications like Six Sigma are typically required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and drive continuous improvement. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality products efficiently, reducing costs, and maintaining competitiveness in advanced manufacturing environments.

What does an advanced manufacturing engineer do?

An advanced manufacturing engineer designs, develops, and implements innovative manufacturing processes and technologies to improve production efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness. They often work with automation, robotics, and computer-aided design (CAD) tools, and may require knowledge of lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies. Their role involves collaboration with cross-functional teams to optimize manufacturing systems and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.

What is an advanced manufacturing engineer?

Advanced Manufacturing Engineers are professionals who focus on developing and improving manufacturing processes using innovative technologies and methods. They work to increase efficiency, quality, and productivity in the production of goods, often by integrating automation, robotics, and data analytics. These engineers collaborate with design, quality, and production teams to implement advanced manufacturing techniques, troubleshoot issues, and ensure products meet industry standards. Their role is critical in driving continuous improvement and maintaining a competitive edge in modern manufacturing environments.

How does an advanced manufacturing engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a new product launch?

Advanced Manufacturing Engineers play a crucial role in new product launches by working closely with design, quality, and production teams. They provide input on manufacturability during the design phase, help develop and optimize manufacturing processes, and support troubleshooting on the shop floor. This collaboration ensures that products are designed for efficient production and high quality, while also meeting cost and timeline goals. Regular meetings, process reviews, and hands-on problem-solving are common aspects of this collaborative environment.

Job description

Aalo Atomics is pioneering a new era in clean energy with factory-fabricated microreactors designed to deliver affordable, scalable, and reliable nuclear power. Our mission is to make nuclear energy globally accessible, starting with the Aalo-1, a 10โ€ฏMWe reactor leveraging cuttingโ€‘edge safety, modularity, and efficiency. Based in Austin, TX, weโ€™re rapidly growing as we work to deploy the worldโ€™s first fleet of advanced microreactors. Join us and help revolutionize energy for a sustainable future.

About the role:

As a Senior Manufacturing Engineer at Aalo Atomics, you will lead the development and optimization of the advanced manufacturing processes and production lines that produce our modular nuclear reactors. You will serve as a technical authority on manufacturing processes, working handsโ€‘on in the factory alongside technicians, machinists, welders and other engineers to bring cuttingโ€‘edge nuclear systems to life. This role blends technical leadership, process development, creative problemโ€‘solving, and direct build support to scale from firstโ€‘ofโ€‘aโ€‘kind builds to highโ€‘rate, reliable, and efficient manufacturing.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for manufacturing processes, providing technical guidance on process selection, producibility, and risk mitigation.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineering to incorporate Design for Manufacturability / Design for Assembly principles.
  • Question requirements and drive simplification.
  • Lead the design, manufacture and qualification of tooling, fixtures, and production equipment.
  • Mentor and develop junior manufacturing and mechanical engineers.
  • Lead root cause investigations and corrective actions for nonโ€‘conformances.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiativesโ€”track and analyze KPIs, reduce cycle time, improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), and increase firstโ€‘pass yield.
  • Create and govern detailed work instructions, manufacturing procedures, and build documentation.
  • Lead manufacturing readiness activities for new reactor designs or design changes (process FMEAs, firstโ€‘article inspections, production proveโ€‘out).
  • Support factory layout, capacity planning, and capital equipment decisions.
  • Champion nuclear quality and safety culture and ensure processes comply with the Aalo Quality Manual.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of handsโ€‘on manufacturing or process engineering experience.
  • Deep expertise in welding, machining, forming, or assembly of complex metallic structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead crossโ€‘functional teams and mentor junior engineers.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, problemโ€‘solving skills, and a bias toward action.
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, handsโ€‘on manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in nuclear, aerospace, defense manufacturing or other highly regulated environments (e.g., AS9100, ISO13845).
  • Strong working understanding of GD&T usage and interpretation (ASME Y14.5).
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience with ASME Sectionโ€ฏIII code work or NQAโ€‘1 quality programs.
  • Experience with metrology equipment, techniques, and processes.
  • Experience scaling manufacturing operations from prototype to serial production.
  • Familiarity with highโ€‘rate or automated production line design and optimization.
  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt certification.
  • Experience with robotic welding, automated inspection, or advanced manufacturing technologies.
  • Proficiency with CAD/CAM software, MES, and PLM tools.
  • Strong communication skills to convey technical reasoning and missionโ€‘critical messaging clearly.
  • ASME Y14.5 GD&T Technologist or Senior level certifications.
Physical Requirements:
  • Comfortable working on the factory floor alongside technicians and welders.
  • Ability to lift up to 25โ€ฏlbs and stand for extended periods.
  • Physical dexterity required for crouching, kneeling, and working in varied positions.
  • Ability to focus and operate effectively in a loud, hot factory environment.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for visa sponsorship now or in the future.
