An Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI) is a certified aviation professional authorized to teach ground school courses for pilots and provide flight-related instruction on aeronautical knowledge. They can offer training for various pilot certificates and ratings, as well as endorse students for knowledge exams. However, unlike Certified Flight Instructors (CFIs), AGIs do not provide in-flight instruction. AGIs play a critical role in preparing student pilots for both written exams and practical flight knowledge.
An Advanced Ground Instructor is responsible for conducting classroom and simulator-based training, designing lesson plans, and preparing students for written and oral aviation exams. You will frequently review and explain FAA regulations, weather theory, navigation procedures, and safety principles. Collaboration with flight instructors and regular assessment of student progress are important aspects of the job, often requiring you to tailor your teaching methods to accommodate various learning styles. This role offers a dynamic blend of structured instruction and individual support, making each day challenging and rewarding for those passionate about aviation education.
To thrive as an Advanced Ground Instructor, you need in-depth knowledge of aviation theory, regulations, and instructional techniques, often supported by an FAA Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI) certificate. Familiarity with computer-based training tools, flight training management systems, and learning management software is frequently required. Outstanding communication, patience, and adaptability are valuable soft skills for explaining complex concepts to diverse learners. These abilities are vital for fostering effective learning environments and ensuring students are well-prepared for aviation examinations and real-world operations.
