What are advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)?

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are electronic systems in vehicles that use advanced technologies to assist drivers in the driving process. These systems enhance vehicle safety and improve the overall driving experience by providing features such as automatic emergency braking, lane departure warnings, adaptive cruise control, and parking assistance. ADAS uses sensors, cameras, and radar to monitor the vehicle's surroundings and help prevent accidents. The goal of ADAS is to reduce human error and make driving safer for everyone on the road.

What is the difference between Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Adas vs Automotive Electronics Technician?

AspectAdvanced Driver Assistance Systems AdasAutomotive Electronics Technician
CredentialsRelevant certifications in ADAS systems, such as OEM-specific trainingASE certifications in electronics and diagnostics
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and calibration of ADAS components in labs or on vehiclesDiagnosing, repairing, and installing automotive electronic systems in repair shops
Industry UsagePrimarily in automotive manufacturing, R&D, and testing facilitiesAuto repair and maintenance facilities across the automotive industry

While both roles involve automotive electronics, ADAS specialists focus on developing and calibrating advanced driver assistance features, whereas automotive electronics technicians handle a broader range of electronic repairs and diagnostics in vehicles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ADAS Engineer, a strong background in automotive engineering, computer vision, sensor fusion, and embedded systems is essential, often supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, CAN bus systems, and programming languages like C++ or Python, as well as knowledge of ISO 26262 certification, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork help professionals excel in developing and integrating complex safety systems. These competencies ensure the creation of reliable, innovative ADAS features that enhance vehicle safety and meet regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by ADAS engineers when integrating new technologies into existing vehicle platforms?

ADAS engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless integration of sensors and software with legacy vehicle architectures, maintaining system reliability under diverse real-world conditions, and meeting strict safety and regulatory standards. Collaboration across multidisciplinary teams—including hardware, software, and testing—is crucial to address these complexities. Additionally, balancing innovation with the need for extensive validation and cost-effectiveness is a frequent consideration in this rapidly evolving field.

Job description

In this position...

We are the movers of the world and the makers of the future. We get up every day, roll up our sleeves and build a better world -- together. At Ford, we're all a part of something bigger than ourselves. Are you ready to change the way the world moves?

Use your technical expertise to make driving safer, easier and better for our customers. The Advance Driver Assistance Technology (ADAS) team develops state-of-the-art software and algorithms to deliver best-in-class features like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and 360 camera systems. ADAS also developed Ford's industry-first Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, securing over 60 patents in the process. The team is responsible for the full end-to-end delivery of these features into production on all Ford vehicle lines.

We are seeking a diligent, detail-driven project management professional to support our Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Software development activities. This involves applying Technical Program Management engineering principles and analytical techniques in support of delivering software for the ADAS ECU.

You'll bring...

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Controls Engineering

  • 5+ years' experience in one or combination of SW program management, engineering management, engineering supervisory role or a technical team leadership role in an embedded technical software discipline

  • 5+ years' experience in the usage of industry standard project management tools for product development and delivery (MS Project or equivalent)
  • 2+ years' experience in the usage of the JIRA work management tool or equivalent for product development and delivery
  • Ability to understand complex technical issues and to present adjusted levels of detail based on target audience
    • 5+ years of experience in product development for either automotive or similar high volume/high reliability markets

    • Very strong business English communication skills (verbal and written)

    • Strong presentation skills with ability to tailor material and presentation style to varied audiences (Executive to working level, strategy to technical)

Even better, you may have...

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or Controls Engineering
  • 7+ years' experience in SW Program Management in an embedded technical software discipline within the automotive domain

  • Strong background in embedded software development, understanding of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams across multiple disciplines (engineering, product, design, testing, quality, etc.) throughout the entire product lifecycle

  • Expert knowledge of Agile development methods and application
  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle methodology

  • Mastery of technical plan development (task identification, task breakdown, timing) for consumption at multiple leadership levels of the organization

  • Extensive experience using Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence, etc), and GitHub source code management tool

  • Extensive experience using Confluence to develop/maintain rich content wiki pages

  • Proven ability to communicate program information to stakeholders at various levels of the organization (written and verbal)

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!

As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home?
