Incorporated in 1955 and encompassing more than 454 acres, the Mt. Prospect Park District provides outstanding recreational programs, events, parks, facilities and services. With seven primary facilities and 27 neighborhood parks, the Park District is an integral part of a thriving multi-generational community. District open space includes two outdoor pools, biking and walking paths, a dog park and sizable space for outdoor athletic programming. The District covers over 11 square miles and serves a region of over a quarter million residents in Mount Prospect and surrounding communities. The Mt. Prospect Park District is a proud recipient of the 2026 Illinois Parks and Recreation Association Exceptional Workplace Award!


We are searching for a part-time Adult Swim Lesson Instructor. The Adult Swim Lesson Instructor is responsible for providing appropriate supervision and ensuring the safety of patrons and staff in the aquatic facility by preventing and responding to emergencies. When working as a Swim Lesson Instructor, also responsible for conducting swimming lessons primarily for adults. Opportunities for additional hours may be available through private swim lessons or substituting for swim lessons within our Sharks Swim Academy. The swim lessons run on Tuesday nights and Sunday afternoons for approximately 2 hours each day at RecPlex. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and be able to successfully pass a criminal background check. The starting pay for the Adult Swim Lesson Instructor is $16.00 per hour. Plus, we offer park district usage benefits.

Requirements:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Provide appropriate supervision to ensure the safety of patrons in Aquatic Programming by preventing and responding to emergencies.


Prevent accidents by enforcing pool rules, and maintaining discipline.


Maintain a clean and organized work environment. Perform basic maintenance and light housekeeping in the pool area and locker rooms to ensure a safe and clean environment.


Report any irregular discipline, safety or maintenance problems to the Pool Manager.


Assist with emergency procedures when necessary upon direction of the Pool Manager on duty.


Attend required training and meetings. Participate in rescue drills, first aid reviews, instructional clinics and other skill development activities.


Perform the job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, employee handbook, and work safety rules. Prevent accidents by maintaining discipline and enforcing agency, departmental and state health rules, policies and procedures.


Teach swim classes in accordance with the Park Districtโ€™s instructional swimming program.


Assist in developing and implementing lesson plans appropriate to program level and participantโ€™s abilities.


Correctly explain and demonstrate each water skill for students.


Set up and put away all the swimming equipment before and after lessons.


Provide students with proper feedback and correction on their performance and offer suggestions for improvement when needed.


Maintain accurate records including attendance, skill sheets, and report cards.


Ensure that class environment, facilities, materials and equipment are organized to enhance individual/group performance and minimize distractions during the lesson period.


SECONDARY DUTIES:

Additional functions as assigned which may be considered essential.


All other duties as assigned by the on-duty Pool Manager, Aquatics Supervisor, Aquatics Manager, Superintendent of Recreation, Director of Recreation, and/or the Executive Director. However, in an emergency, perform all other duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D.


Must be at least 18 years old when working as an Adult Swim Lesson Instructor.


CPR (Infant, Child and Adult), AED and First Aid Certification is a plus.


Ability to work with individuals on a progressive development plan for stroke efficiency.


Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time as well as be able to walk around the pool facilities.


Must be able to communicate effectively with others for safety purposes and to allow for coordination of work. Must be able to effectively communicate with Park District patrons and coworkers.


Must be able to recognize unsafe conditions and respond accordingly. Must be able to quickly respond to emergency situations while understanding procedures and policies.


Must be able to lift 30+ pounds. Must be able to perform tasks that require walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, lifting and reaching. Must be able to enter the pool at any given time.


Work is conducted indoors in a chlorinated pool environment.


Due to the needs of the Park District, evening and weekend hours may be required. Your work schedule may vary and your workweek may exceed regular hours at times, but will be less than 1,000 hours per year. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job function of the Swim Lesson Instructor position.
